Blaise's POV
I ran through the halls, asking everyone I passed if they had seen Mila. None of them had. As I ran around the corner, I bumped into Fred, and way deep down I wanted to punch him, but it was way too deep for me to even realize it in the moment. As much as I was insanely jealous of him, I was also incredibly grateful for him and the way he treated Mila.
"Oh, Blaise! Hey!" He exclaimed. I put on a smile, and waved.
"Have you seen Mila? I really have to talk to her." I panted. He told me she was out in the garden, and I went there without any hesitation, shouting back to him a kind 'thank you, Fred'.
I saw Mila reading in the grass, and smiled just looking at her, before realizing what I was about to do could possibly ruin our friendship that we had had for so long.
"I should have known you'd be here," I panted. She turned around, and smiled when she saw me. For once she closed her book before finishing the chapter. She had this rule where she would never stop reading before she got to the next chapter, and she'd yell at anyone who interrupted her, but she didn't seem bothered one bit.
Fred really was changing her. Either changing her, or bringing out more of who she really was way deep down that she had stored for so long.
"What are you doing here?" She asked. "You feeling better?"
"I figured you should know about earlier," I sighed. She patted the spot in the grass beside her, and I sat. "Mila, I'm so happy about you and Fred. You two were practically made for each other."
"I like him a lot," She said. Part of my heart that was still pieced together fell apart.
"But Mila, I really like you. I have for the longest time." I breathed. For a second she didn't process my words and acted as if I hadn't said anything. After a moment, it processed in her mind, and she looked at me, her eyes wide.
"Blaise-"
Her eyes were hypnotizing. I wanted to kiss her, but I resisted.
"I wish- I wish I could say the same. And honestly, I used to like you... but I guess I stopped when Fred came along-"
She sounded heartbroken. Genuine. Like she didn't know if what she was saying was the right thing.
"No, it's okay. You and Fred are perfect for each other. I'm glad I got you to tell him."
I saw a tear fall down her cheek, and she stuffed her head into my shoulder and hugged me. Although what was currently happening was depressing and breaking me to pieces, her hug nearly healed me. For a moment I was happy again. Until she let go. More tears were falling down her cheeks. "Blaise, I feel awful."
"I told you not to-"
"It's not just that, Blaise! I've always treated everyone so poorly, including you, and here I am, finally becoming a reasonable person, and now I feel like I'm still hurting you."
I reached over and grabbed her hand.
"Blaise, I really do love you. Just not in the way you love me. Promise me that we will always be best friends." She said through her tears.
Although part of me was hurting, I smiled, and it was a real smile. I pulled her in for another hug, and it lasted a while.
"Always."
Fred's POV
I decided to go find Mila after Blaise had asked where she was. I went out the back and into the garden, and saw Blaise talking to Mila. I smiled. Blaise really was a good friend to Mila, a friend that she deserved.
But soon I noticed a tear fall down her face, and she dived into him, hugging him tightly. The two both looked sad.
Mila stood up after a while, and was going to go back into the school, when she saw me. She ran over to me, and hugged me as tears continued to go down her face. She wiped them with a smile.
"Hi, Fred."
"You're crying."
"I'm okay, I promise. Just a tender conversation with Blaise." I wiped a few tears from her face that she missed, and looked over her shoulder over to Blaise who smiled at me. A single tear fell from his face, and he waved to me.
"You don't have to tell me." I said. "But I need to know if he hurt you or not."
"He didn't. Not at all," She said. She smiled a bit, and I believed her.
I held her hand, and we walked back into the school.
Mila's POV
I was afraid to talk to Blaise for the next three days, just because I didn't know what I would say to him. I felt really bad when he stayed clear of me to respect my space. At meals, he would sit away from Pansy, Draco, and I. It was obvious I'd rather sit by him than them, especially when Pansy wouldn't stop flirting with Draco, but I didn't know how I'd approach him.
One night, I felt extra bad, and I knew exactly where he was thanks to Draco. I went into the library where- sure enough- Blaise was sitting, reading a book. "It's been a bit since I've said something," I said. He put his book down.
"Mila?"
"Hi." He didn't say anything, so I continued. "Do you want to go with me to the lake?"
"I- I would love that, Mila." He said. He placed the book back on the shelf, and stood up with a smile. We both stood there for a moment, and then I smiled widely. I grabbed him like he had that one day he pulled me to the great hall, and we ran through the school, and then down to the lake. I noticed he was smiling widely.
"Sorry I haven't talked to you in a few days. I just didn't know what I would say."
"It's okay, I get that I made everything awkward-"
I guess I had been around Fred too much, because I filled my hands with the water from the lake, and splashed it all over him, making him smile and laugh a bit.
"Blaise, you didn't make it awkward. We're still friends. And just because I like Fred doesn't mean I tell him everything. That's what you're for."
He splashed me with a bigger splash of water- probably since he had bigger hands- and I giggled. "If he ever hurts you, he's dead." Blaise whispered. I giggled more, and nodded in agreement.
For the next three hours, Blaise and I sat and talked, played in the water, and enjoyed each other's company. I no longer had to feel bad. Everything was perfect now that I had Fred and Blaise so close to me.
Well- everything was perfect until the school year ended and it was time to go back home for the summer.
