Her POV
On the day that was meant to be the happiest of her life, she sat in her room, clutching a letter that had arrived from her supposed to be husband. With trembling hands, she unfolded the letter, each word cutting deeper than the last. In it, he laid bare his truth—he wasn't in love with her, nor was he ready for the commitment of marriage. He described himself as a free soul, unprepared to be tied down by marriage, and expressed his desire to travel the world without any restrictions.
Her heart felt like it was being crushed under the weight of his words. Each line of the letter seemed to tear apart the fabric of her reality, Her eyes were blurred with tears, her vision shifting between the letter in her hands and the empty space.
He left her on their wedding day.
For her, this was more than death. The man she thought she would spend her life with had abandoned her at the most important moment of their life.
Wasn't her wedding day supposed to be the happiest day of her life? She had finally thought she would have a life partner-a friend, a listener, someone who cared for her and made her feel special. That maybe a someone for her who would prioritise her.
She had high hopes for her marriage and her husband. Why wouldn't she? The way he looked at her made her feel unique. He could make her laugh effortlessly, and the love she saw in his eyes was undeniable. She was happy because she was finally in love, and it wasn't one-sided. He loved her too.
But her happiness was short-lived. She quickly realized she wasn't destined for such joy. Despite her dreams and hopes, she wasn't meant to experience the simple, profound happiness of mutual love. It seemed she was fated to a different path, one devoid of the love and companionship she had so dearly longed for.
He had shattered her trust, and with it, her ability to feel.
Despite her pain, she didn't want her family to be shocked or hurt by this betrayal. She didn't want them to bear the consequences of something they had no control over.
All she wanted now was to leave this place and find somewhere peaceful, somewhere she could be alone. But the crying and screaming around her were making her so anxious that she didn't even realize when she started crying. Her hands were shaking, her throat was dry, and a sharp pain pierced her chest, making her breathing irregular.
The noise began to die down, turning into whispers as his family entered the room-his parents and elder brother. For a moment, she thought this must be some cruel prank, a test of her love for him. Her eyes stayed glued to the door, hoping he would walk in, laugh at her, and tell her it was all a joke, that he was still going to marry her. But he didn't. He never showed up. All her hopes were shattered.
His parents looked guilty, speaking to her parents with folded hands. Tears were in everyone's eyes. Her senses were overwhelmed; she couldn't hear or feel anything, unable to comprehend the scene unfolding before her. Her thoughts were solely focused on him. She stood there like a living corpse, numb and unresponsive.
Her POV
She wasn't afraid of society, nor was she disappointed by the man who had left her at the altar. What truly frightened her was the solution proposed by both his and her family to save face and avoid the "shame."
They told her she had to marry his elder brother. Not once did anyone ask if she was ready for this.
No one sought her consent. Everyone treated her like a liability, as if her life had been ruined, and she should feel fortunate that someone was willing to marry her at all. Even her own parents didn't ask if she was ready for this, or if she was alright.
They saw a problem to be solved, not a heart to be healed.
It wasn’t the idea of marrying his brother that scared her most; it was the fact that no one considered her feelings or choice in the matter. The pressure to fix the situation without regard for her own life or happiness felt like a heavy burden. She felt trapped, her future now being decided by others rather than by her own wishes.
She felt a deep, consuming anger toward everyone around her for treating her like a mere burden. The people she once cherished couldn’t see her pain, couldn’t hear her silent cries. All the love she had once felt had been drained from her, leaving her heart empty and devoid of warmth. She hated everyone.
Especially him. The man she had once loved the most, who had played with her emotions as if she were a toy. Now, he was nothing more than a mere name to her, a symbol of betrayal. To them, she was merely a burden, not a person with feelings and dreams. In their rush to preserve their own reputation, they had lost sight of her humanity.
She wasn’t a bride anymore; she was a pawn in their ruthless game of honor.
