Marriage
Though she was never asked for her consent for this marriage, she agreed. She felt her self bend to the weight of expectations, resigning herself to spend a lifetime with a stranger. A stranger whom she knew nothing about, besides his name; beyond that, he remained a mystery to her.
She hasn't even looked at him. She hadn't even glimpsed at his face, let alone locked eyes with him. But she agreed, to make her parents tension-free. They deserved that for everything they have ever done for her. She couldn't see them in stress anymore.
She never smiled though. Throughout the wedding, not a single smile graced her lips. Never in a million year she had thought that. She was always worried that people would judge her for smiling too much. But today she thinks they maybe judging her for not smiling at all.
His face was covered with "sehra" and no one was able to tell who was behind the veil. All the guest in the wedding thought she got married to younger brother. Cause that was important for every one to save her so called 'dignity'.
Because people will presume that it was her fault that her fiance ran away.
As the day continued, she felt burdened by how others saw her. She really wished someone could understand her true feelings instead of just what they saw on the outside. But in the middle of all these customs, it seemed like she couldn't express herself, and her real feelings stayed secret.
Finally, they became husband and wife, tied together in a marriage neither of them desired. What they had tried to avoid had come to pass. Despite their feelings, everyone else seemed content with the outcome, except for the two of them.
As the guest started to leave the venue. And they still continued to complete the many rituals of the wedding. They sat opposite to each other. His sehra off his face. She could finally look at him. She could finally study the face of the man she married, who was a complete stranger to her. But his eyes which never looked at her even for once. His eyes had a undeniable sadness. His face looked tired. And a unexplainable emotion at his face which tugged at her.
The sight of him in this state, a state caused by her presence, became almost unbearable. She hadn't wished for this, hadn't asked for his discomfort or anyone discomfort because of her.
The room felt suffocatingly small, filled with unspoken words and the heavy atmosphere of unmet expectations. She had never intended to be the cause of someone else's misery, yet here she was, an unwitting reason for his pain.
Outside, the world continued on, unaware of the inner rage within her. The wedding festivities continued, each ritual a reminder of the life she was now bound to, a life chosen not out of desire but obligation, She cast a fleeting glance at her new husband, still a stranger despite the vows exchanged, and wondered what thoughts were in his mind. Did he, regret this marriage forced upon them so much that could not even hide his expression of pain?
In that moment, the thought occurred to her that she could have chosen to live on her own terms or even run away from this situation altogether. All of this turmoil and sadness was due to her presence. The weight of responsibility settled heavily upon her, and she couldn't help but question the events that had led them to this point.
The turmoil and sadness engulfed her, knowing that her presence alone had caused such anguish in the man now sitting before her."
