"Food!" Grover moaned.
The bull-man wheeled toward him, pawed the ground again, and got ready to charge. Percy thought about how he had squeezed the life out of his mother, made her disappear in a flash of light, and rage filled him like high-octane fuel. He got both hands around one horn and he pulled backward with all his might.
The monster tensed, gave a surprised grunt, then-snap! The bull-man screamed and flung him through the air. Percy landed flat on his back in the grass. His head smacked against a rock. When he sat up, his vision was blurry, but he had a horn in his hands, a ragged bone weapon the size of a knife.
The monster charged. Without thinking, Percy rolled to one side and came up kneeling. As the monster barreled past, he drove the broken horn straight into his side, right up under his furry rib cage. The bull-man roared in agony. He flailed, clawing at his chest, then began to disintegrate-not like his mother, in a flash of golden light, but like crumbling sand, blown away in chunks by the wind, the same way Mrs. Dodds had burst apart.
The monster was gone.
The rain had stopped. The storm still rumbled, but only in the distance. Percy smelled like livestock and his knees were shaking. Suddenly he was blinded by a bright light, and the first thing that came to his mind was:
Heaven.
Great.
Then an angel felt towards him her smile contagious, her wings were as dark as her hair and a bit larger than here, on her head stood a rose gold circlet. She was wearing one of those white and gold gowns princesses from ancient Greek would wear.
"You're hurt"
She walked closer to him and that's when he had a perfect view of her face, and he thought well if I'm gonna die, this isn't really a bad way to go.
"Oh really? Gosh I had no idea"
She laughed. It was melodic and he felt like he wanted to hear for the rest of his life, she carried him bridal-style and soared away.
"Almost there now"
"Are you an angel?"
She giggled, "far from that actually"
The last thing he remembered is being gently placed on a wooden porch, looking up at a ceiling fan circling above him, moths flying around a yellow light, and the stern faces of a familiar-looking bearded man and a girl, her blond hair curled.
They both looked down at him, and the girl said, "He's the one. He must be."
"Silence, Annabeth," the man said. "He's still conscious. Bring him inside, Lyra"
Percy must've woken up several times, but what he heard and saw made no sense, so he just passed out again. He remembered lying in a soft bed, being spoon-fed something that tasted like buttered popcorn, only it was pudding.
