Becoming Me - Chapter 8
"Okay so remember to pick up the video cameras once you're done with practice," I told my brother as we got out of the car to walk in to the school. This was all apart of our plan. Since we were aware of how blatantly awful our mom and step dad were, we were going to catch them on camera treating us badly. This would be the only way to prove to a judge that we belonged with our dad or to maybe even just bribe them with the footage to let us see our dad. There was no way this wouldn't work.
"Trust me, I won't. We need to build our case as quickly as we can," Josh said while heading into the school. As I walked into the school alongside my brother, I bumped into Hilary.
"Hey Danielle, I wanted to talk to you about something," Hilary said, pulling me aside.
"Catch you later Josh. Alright what's up?" I questioned her.
"You were acting pretty weird yesterday when Derek and I bumped into you. Did I do something wrong?" Hilary said sincerely. It was hard to be upset with her, because she really did care about how I felt, and I could tell. I never told her about my feelings for Derek anyway so she was not to blame. I mean, who wouldn't want Derek, he was amazing.
"No, no you haven't done anything at all! I just wasn't having a great day, and I was surprised to see you two together. That's all, I swear," I told her, being completely honest.
"Oh great! And yeah I was pretty shocked about my relationship with Derek too. He just randomly started talking to me. He said something about this girl he liked stop noticing him or something and he had just given up and he needed a distraction. I was just happy he came to me about it. Anyways, we better head to Home EC or we're going to be late," Hilary said joyfully. But she sounded pretty desperate to me. Who would want to be someone's rebound?
I obviously had to move on after what Hilary told me. Derek had given up on me. He didn't want me anymore, he wanted her and I just had to deal with it. If he could move on that fast then I could too.

In Home EC I finally had my first real conversation with Zach. I was shocked that he even looked in my direction, but it started when Hilary and I walked through the door.
"You're friends with my step-sister? I wouldn't do that if I were you." Zach instigated.
"Excuse me? You're actually acknowledging my existence today? What a shock! And by the way, yes I am friends with your sister and that has nothing to do with you," I snapped back.
"Keyword, 'step-sister.' Do we even look alike to you? No, we don't because we're not even the same race. Secondly, just wait until she steals your boyfriend, best-friend OR BOTH. Wait, unless she already has and you just don't even know it yet." He whispered seriously.
As he said that I really started to wonder if he was right about Hilary because she had already stolen Derek from me. But she seemed so honest and sincere when she asked if I was upset. I didn't know what to believe.
"Well I don't have a boyfriend and she's only been nice to me since we met, unlike you." I said with a smirk.
"Okay, okay you got me there but seriously watch out for her. If she sees something she wants she will steal it from you," Zach said then turned to start on the pillow he was sewing.
As I started to work on my pillow I couldn't help but think about all that Zach said. I hoped he wasn't right but I knew that I would have to distance myself from her.

On my daily walk home from school I heard a car honk at me from behind. I turned around and saw that it was my brother.
"Hey I thought you had practice," I said as I got in the car.
"It was canceled, they said a big storm was coming. Anyway, let's go pick up those cameras!" Josh said excitedly. We were both excited about seeing the downfall of our mother and Dave.
When we arrived to the tech store we looked around at all the different cameras so we could find the most inconspicuous one. Once we finally found the perfect one we realized that we did not have the money for it.
"I can take the money out of my checking account, it's enough for at least three of these," Josh said hopefully. But we both knew that if we took that much money out of the bank our mom would notice and she would ask questions.
"How about we come back in a few weeks after we've saved up enough cash and then only buy two." I said, looking at Josh for his approval of the idea. He nodded but I could tell he wasn't happy. This meant our plan had to wait at least another month. Which meant another month or more without our dad. So Josh and I left the store and went home to another miserable night with the parents from hell.
