Becoming Me - Chapter 14

"...So then he hit on Josh and we just left," I said as I finished updating Kelsey on what happened. As soon as I finished Josh's phone rang. He quickly answered the phone and walked out of the room but I followed right behind him.

"I just got Dani, and we left. I can't have her around him anymore because if he hurt her, I would kill him," Josh said angrily. I couldn't hear what my dad was saying but Josh was just nodding his head. "We would come to your house dad but that would only make things worse. We got footage of it all so we just need to go back and get the cameras and then we should be in with you. Alright, see you soon...love you too." Josh still didn't know I was behind him and when he hung up the phone he broke down in tears, his face was starting to bruise up from where Dave hit him.

"Hey, hey Josh! It's okay! We're going to get this all worked out, it's all my fault," I whimpered while beginning to break down too. I then got a text from Zach,

"fun hangin w/ you today. maybe we could do it again soon ;)" the text said. I couldn't even acknowledge that at this point because if I wouldn't have gone over there none of this would have happened. Kel then came out of her room to talk to us in the hallway,

"Alright so Dani, you can crash in my room and Josh, you can have my brother's room since he's in college! You guys know where everything is so help yourselves and just let me know if you need anything." She announced. I was so grateful to have a friend like her to put up with all of my drama.

"We'll be out of here in the morning, this really means a lot so thanks," Josh thanked. I went up to her and hugged her.

"I love you girl, thanks," I chimed in.

The next morning I woke up confused because I wasn't in my bed. Then I realized that I was crashing with Kelsey. I looked over and picked up my phone to see fifty missed calls from my mom and two missed calls from Dave. She had also left tons of texts that were basically threatening Josh and I.

"Call me right now!!!!"

"You're gonna regret this young lady!"

"idk who you think you are! You better get back home right now," those were the nicest ones though. I jumped up when I listened to her voicemail.

"Unless you want your stuff to get rained on, you better come get it. All of you and your brother's things are sitting out on the front lawn. If you don't get them by 12:30 today they're going to Good Will," she hollered into the phone. As soon as the voicemail ended I ran to the next room to get Josh. I hastily knocked on the door.

"Calm down girl, what do you need? I was just getting ready for school," he said unknowingly to the fact that we had gotten kicked out of our house.

"Have you not checked your phone? Mom has put all of our stuff out on the front lawn!" I screamed at him. At first he looked shocked, then sad, then furious.

"How could she do that? Let's go! Get Kelsey's mom to write us a checkout note and we'll go get our clothes at 11. Now we can move in with Dad and there's nothing she can do about it because SHE kicked us out," he said then winced. I looked him over and just realized that he started to bruise up all over from Dave's beating. I just wanted to cry looking at him. I ran over and hugged him gently,

"Josh, this is all my fault and I'm so sorry! You're the best big brother and you didn't deserve this. Let's get you some ice," I confessed.

"I would much rather be the one in pain than you! Now, we can get away from Dave and will finally be happy," he said smiling down at me. We then both went to get ready, got the check out note, and headed to school.

As we arrived to school Derek came up to our car.

"Look, I'm not in the mood to deal with you this morning so goodbye," I proclaimed without giving him a chance to say a word.

"Dang, Dani! You must be over your crush on him because that was just plain old cold," Kel insisted. After that I went to the office to take my letter and then walked to Home EC class. On my way there I ran into Zach,

"Oh my gosh, sorry I didn't text you back! I've just been having a lot going on," I explained feeling extremely guilty. He had been such a great guy and I just blew him off.

"Dani, don't stress about it! If you need anything or just need to talk you can come to me," he insisted to me with a dazzling smile. I didn't understand how this was the same guy I met on that first week.

"Thank you so much! That really does mean a lot," I beamed while hugging him before I could even stop myself

"Thank you so much! That really does mean a lot," I beamed while hugging him before I could even stop myself. I could tell he was taken back a bit by the hug at first but he soon hugged me back.

"Let's get to class, I don't want you to get on Mrs. Clark's bad side," he chuckled then led me to class.
