Nyla's POV:

Who's this guy standing next to Amelia? Friend? Acquaintence? Stranger? Couldn't be a past client of hers. She continues to stare at me so does the guy. I turn to Phoenix and he loosens his tie. "I'm sorry for the interruption but we need to talk to Chief right, Agent Whitlock. Let's go." Before I could do anything I get pulled away. Fuck. I glare slightly at Phoenix but he doesn't say anything.

"I don't wanna hear it Nyla, we gotta tell Chief now." He tells me and I nod, "Right right." I shake my head, Amelia can wait. This is more important. "There he is!" Phoenix pulls me harshly and we land in front of Chief's feet. "Oh, gentleman these are two of my Agents. Agent Whitlock and Agent Hill." We get introduced to men in suits, I'm not going to spend time worrying about who they are. It doesn't matter. "Chief we need to talk privately, it's important." I tell him and his face goes serious. He excuses himself and we begin walking out of the ballroom but I catch Amelia's eye before we step out.

After checking if the coast is clear in the hallway, I hand him my phone with a single picture that was painted by another crime scene. Another death involving an escort and a client. The crime board just got bigger.

"Is this a threat?" He asks scanning the image. "It was written in blood, the forensic team was able to confirm its blood. The words 'Come and get me before I get her for myself' painted above the bodies of the hotel room. It's getting worse, we haven't gotten closer to the killer but we know the motive comes with jealousy and anger. People can get attached to others after not experiencing human touch for weeks, months, even years. For some these services are their last hope for a human connection." I say in one breath.

Chief hands me my phone back and breathes in slowly. "What's your plan then?" He glances between the both of us. "I have multiple teams out on patrol by these establishments, watching who enters and who leaves. I'm still working on talking to owners hoping they'll allow us to see their appointment schedule and who schedules them. These women's lives are in danger Sir." I tell him and he pats my shoulder.

"Good work, both of you we just need to move quicker. I was told you have an escort working with you as well. Is that true?" I get asked, I turn to Phoenix but he doesn't say anything. "Yes that's true, that's how we know about the killer's motives or what's driving them at least-" I pause after hearing a group of men laugh down the hall. "We'll talk more about this tomorrow, be at my office as soon as you come in. I'll see you two be safe." He gives a curt nod then leaves Phoenix and I alone.

"Now what?" I ask him and he shrugs. "I don't know Nyla, but you might wanna keep an eye on your partner inside, she could be next. Anyone could be next, these women could crazy exes that are out to get them. Amelia is one of them." He leans against the wall rubbing his eyes. I stood frozen. Amelia could be next. I didn't like that thought at all but it shouldn't affect me at all, it was just a dance between us. Nothing more.

"It could happen to anyone Phoenix. You know that." I rub my temple. "You're right, I'm sorry I didn't mean to single her out but seriously we're gonna need to talk more about what happened in that club because you came back a little different I think." He gives me a small smile making me want to smack it off. "I don't know what you're talking about." I turn away beginning to walk back into the ball room.

"You definitely do, I don't need you to admit anything but I do need you to realize you've grown an attraction to the woman and I don't blame you okay. It's been a while, she could be good for you." He explains, "I'm gonna pretend you didn't say that." I flip him off and he just laughs. "You know we're not supposed to be in there right?" He glances at me, I keep my hand over the door handle but I don't open it.

"Yeah you're right, let's just go. I don't know why I was going in anyway." I play it off and we head to the nearest exit. I definitely didn't need to open that door but seeing Amelia there threw me off I think. She looked beautiful. She almost seemed relieved I was there and I think a part of me was happy to see her too. "Nyla?" I freeze before I get into my car, Phoenix glances at me from the passenger side and smirks. "Wipe that smirk off your face." I mouth to him before turning around.
