ONE YEAR BEFORE THE MOMENT THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

Wooyoung was training with Yeosang in combat. One could never know, although it hadn't happened often over the years to meet other vampires, the times it had happened they had always needed to defend themselves.

At one point, he heard the phone ring. It was San's mother. Wooyoung raised an eyebrow, surprised. Yeosang huffed, going to sit down. He understood that practice was over.

"Mrs. Choi?"

"Hello Wooyoung, can I bother you for a minute?"

"You never bother. Tell me."

"Is San with you?"

"...No. Why?"

"Is he not? He was supposed to be back home hours ago. I thought he had met directly with you after returning from the vacation."

San had gone skiing with his taekwondo teammates for a week. It had been his graduation present and he had been looking forward for the snow to come for the last months. He hadn't know how to ski, but he was a fast learner.

"No. I haven't actually heard from him yet. In any case, don't worry, I'll find him."

With that said, he hung up the phone, immediately calling San. He did not answer. Very strange.

"Have you lost your human?" asked Yeosang.

Wooyoung blatantly ignored him, leaving to go find San. To his surprise, Yeosang followed him.

"What do you want?"

"Can't I help you?"

"Why should you?"

"Because I know that expression. You're worried. Do you think something bad happened to him?"

"What do you care? Maybe you're hoping for it."

Yeosang grabbed his arm. "Listen Wooyoung. You know I don't like this situation, but I'm tired of fighting with you. This has been going on for five years. I won't like it, but if something happened to that human I'm afraid you'd spend the rest of eternity trying to commit suicide. Don't you want my help? Two vampires are better than one."

"...All right then. In fact, I'm worried. They left hours ago from the shelter, he should have been home by now."

"Shall we go all the way back to the shelter?"

"Let's go."

The two started running at top speed, which in their case was incredibly fast, and after a little over an hour, Wooyoung finally caught a familiar scent.

They were about halfway between the shelter and the city. Wooyoung was convinced this time his heart had stopped beating for the second time in those 225 years. San's companion's car was on the side of the road, crumpled against the guardrail.

"Oh fuck," he heard Yeosang say.

Wooyoung rushed to the car, pulling the rear door off to extract San's body from the vehicle.

"Wait Wooyoung, you risk doing worse! Humans are fragile!"

But by then Wooyoung had already pulled San out of the car. Holding him in his arms, he knelt on the ground, trying to figure out the extent of his injuries.

He saw that Yeosang was keeping his distance. His eyes were black. There was quite a bit of blood, indeed, but Wooyoung was focused on something else.

He noticed that San was breathing. His heart was beating steadily. When he moved him, he groaned faintly. He had taken a blow to the head, it was bleeding profusely, but on closer inspection it did not look very deep. His arm was probably broken, judging by the angle of his elbow. His back looked normal. His legs as well. All in all, he was relatively well.
