Today was Halloween. My favorite holiday.
Today was the one day we were allowed to wear costumes to school. I had decided to dress up as a fairy, matching with my best friend, Jenna Hunt. I curled my blonde hair and put on a knee length blue dress that matched my eyes, blue converses, with sparkly white wings and a blue flower crown. I also put on mascara and some light makeup. Satisfied, I walked downstairs to see my older sister Ashley, eating breakfast.
"Hey Ash," I said. "Do you like my costume"
"It's cute" She asked. "Are you and Jenna going trick or treating?"
"Yeah," I said. "We might meet up with Cole and Dalton too."
I grabbed my backpack and said good bye to her and my parents and got on the bus.~Timeskip~
I walked into class and sat in my usual spot next to Jenna. She was wearing the same outfit as me except a short green dress and green converses, with a green flower crown resting in her dark curly hair.
"Hey Jenna!" I said. I noticed that my test from yesterday was on my desk. I had gotten a ninety seven.
"Hey!" She replied. "What did you get on your test?"
"A ninety seven," I said, "you?"
"Same." She replied.
At that moment, our friend Cole walked in. Cole was about average height, with close cropped blonde hair and green eyes. He was dressed as a bloody scarecrow with arrows
sticking out of his costume.
"Hey guys" he said, plopping down in the seat behind Jenna. His test read ninety eight.
"Hey Cole" I said.
"Hi" said Jenna.
"What are you?" I asked curiously.
"Are you a dead scarecrow?" Asked Jenna.
"Close," Cole replied. "I'm a scarecrow that got used for target practice."
"Because that makes sense." I said teasingly.
"Are those real arrows?" Asked Jenna.
"Yeah, but I broke off the tips." He said.
"Halloween or not, I figured they would send me home if I brought sharp arrows to school."
"Yeah, probably," I said, laughing.
"You aced another test," Jenna said, "I thought scarecrows weren't supposed to have brains."
"I wasn't a scarecrow yesterday," he replied, "I like your costumes."
I shared a glance with Jenna before saying,
"Do you know what we are?"
Cole scrunched his face, as if we had stumped him. "Ghosts?"
I rolled my eyes and said, "you know, right?"
Cole nodded, "your a cheerleader."
"Wrong," said Jenna.
"I'm kidding! Your fairy's," He said.
"Wrong again," said Jenna, "Are you even trying!"
"Seriously?" Cole asked, "I thought I had it that time."
"Kidding," she said, "We're fairy's"
"I knew it." He said.
I smiled at the two of them. It was almost painful watching them flirt when they both liked each other.
"Hey, did you guys here about the new haunted house?" He asked.
"On Wilson Avenue?" I asked. "I heard about it."
"Yeah," said Jenna. "People keep talking about it, but other than that I haven't heard anything about it."
"The guy who just moved in there supposedly did effects for Hollywood," Cole replied. "I heard that some of the stuff in his spook alley is real. Like live bats and tarantulas and amputated body parts from the hospital."
"I guess that might be freaky." Jenna said.
"I'd have to see it to believe it." I replied.
"It's supposed to be free," Cole said, "are you going trick-or-treating?"
"Yeah, you?" I asked.
"I was planning to go around with Dalton." He said.
"Do you know the address?" Jenna asked.
"For the haunted house?" Cole asked. "I wrote it down."
"We should check it out, want to meet up around seven?" I said.
"Where?" Cole asked.
"Do you know that guys house in the corner with the huge flagpole?" I asked.
"Sure." He replied. "Meet there?"
Everyone knew that house. It was a one story house, but the flag pole was basically a skyscraper. The old guy looks like a veteran. He raised and lowered the flag every morning and night.
"Bring the address." I said.
Mr. Brock started class a few minutes later. I couldn't focus much, I was excited for tonight.
The rest of the day passed in a blur. I tried to pay attention but I was difficult when you were going to a haunted house, supposedly with real human amputations. When the day was finally over, me and Jenna took the bus back to my house to get ready.
When we got there, I plugged in the hair straightener.
"So," she said. "Have any guys caught you're eye yet?"
I shrugged. "Not really. They're all stupid."
She frowned. "One of these days when you finally get a crush, I'm going to tease the crap out of you for payback."
I smiled. "You can try."
We both touched up our hair and makeup before we started walking. The house with the flagpole was only a few blocks from my house.
When we got to the house, there was way more than a few kids there. Dalton and Cole were there, along with Lacie and Sarah, who were standing with Blake, a bossy kid who likes to take charge, and two other boys I didn't know, I had seen them around school, but I didn't know their names.
"There they are," Blake said. "We can leave now."
"I have the address," Cole offered.
"I know where it is," Blake said. "I went by earlier tonight."
"What's it like?" Dalton asked. Dalton was about the same height as Cole, with light brown hair and bright blue eyes. He was dressed as a clown.
"I didn't go inside, I just live nearby." Blake said.
As we started walking, Blake took the lead, I fell in beside Dalton, Jenna and Cole.
"Do you think the spooky alley will actually be freaky?" Dalton asked.
"It better be," I said. "I have my hopes up."
We marched briskly past a group of kids in superhero masks. Most houses had halfhearted decorations, some had none. Most were giving out candy. One house had full sized candy bars.
We caught up with Blake and the other kids.
"I heard they have real cadavers," Blakewas saying. "Dead bodies donated to science but stolen to use as decorations."
"Think that's true?" Cole wondered aloud.
"I doubt it," I said. "The guy would be in jail."
"What do you know about it?" Blake challenged.
"Have you been stealing corpses?"
"Nope," I said. "Your mom was too broke to hire me."
Everyone laughed at that. Blake had no reply.
As we were walking, I almost hoped that Blake would take a wrong turn. He didn't. When the spooky alley house came into view, Blake displayed it like he personally decorated it. I rolled my eyes at him.
The house looked decent on the outside, much better than others they had seen. It had a few fake ravens perched on the roof, webby curtains hung from the gutters. One of the jack-O-lanterns puked seeds and pulp onto the sidewalk. The lawn had a lot of cardboard headstones, with the occasional skeleton leg or arm sticking up from the dirt.
"Not bad." I said.
"I don't know," Cole said. "After all the buildup, I was expecting granite tombstones with actual human skeletons. Maybe some ghost holograms."
"The best stuff might be inside." Dalton said.
"We'll see," said Cole.
Blake went up and knocked in the door. The door swung open revealing a guy with long hair and a stubby beard. He stepped away inviting us in.
And in we went.
