Chapter 23

They Don't Know About Us

I found a taxi waiting outside the hotel. Maybe it had been waiting for me, maybe not. I couldn't tell since I was too busy hurting my knee as I threw myself into the back seat and told the driver the local headquarter's address. A throbbing pain slowly arose in my poor knee and I felt my eyes start sting a little. As the pain started taking over my senses, I pressed my eyelids together and realized I wasn't wearing any make up. Things were definitely not turning out as I had planned.

I didn't have to tell the driver twice to hurry. He was probably used to driving fast because he didn't have any problems at all when he zigzagged between the cars and busses in the narrow streets. Karlstad flew past my gaze outside the window. Still, I couldn't concentrate on my surroundings or where I was heading. My mind was racing; thoughts about Harry, the pictures of me on the internet and the horrible pain in my knee were stunning my entire brain and kept me from thinking straight.

Though it was the 20th August and it should be hot outside, the sun was hidden behind a layer of thick clouds. It was cold, even for Sweden, for the season and as I had been running from the hotel doors to the black taxi, cold winds had grabbed my blonde hair and my black skirt. I was actually expecting it to rain and just as the thought hit my mind, small raindrops started falling from the grey sky and ran down the car's windows. Within a minute, the sky had opened up and the rain was pouring down on the asphalt, making it almost impossible for the driver to see through the clutter of the wipers.

I was so screwed.

I almost wanted to dry, that's how mad I was at myself. I had screwed it all up! It was all my fault and the headquarter knew all about it. The evidences were everywhere and I couldn't do anything to cover my tracks. The lads were talking about me during their concerts, huge rumors about mine and Harry's "love affair" were whispered about in every corner of the fandom and now there were pictures of me in white lace underwear all over the internet. And the headquarter knew all about it.

I was going to lose my job.

I was going to lose our only financial income during the summer and it was all my fault.

The silent tears started falling down my pale cheeks at the same pace as the raindrops on the windshield...

"Welcome, miss Warren. Please, have a seat."

Just the tone in Mr. Andersen's voice sent chills up my spine. He knew. I could feel that he knew. He knew that the lads were my best friends even though I had promised to stay away from them.

I swallowed and sat down on one of the hard and uncomfortable chairs around the big round table. My back was professionally straight and my face didn't show any of the doubts that were pounding on the inside of my head. The tall man in the same black and boring suit sat down on the other end of the table and was crossing his arms as he leaned back. He watched me with his black and empty eyes, maybe searching for weaknesses that could reveal my secrets. I wasn't going to let him find them.
