Chapter 1

Same Mistakes

"So... Tell me a bit of yourself," said the well dressed man in front of me and took a sip of his boiling hot coffee. He frowned at the heat, loosened his collar and smiled gently at me. Why was I here again?

"What do you want me to tell?" I asked and tried to avoid sounding nervous. Why was I nervous? I was never nervous!

"Why don't you start with the basics? Name, age..." The man shrugged in his suit and I sighted. Here we go again...

"My name is Jessica Warren. I'm turning nineteen in December and live a mile outside Stockholm with my Dad and younger brother. I got off high school a few weeks ago."

"Good grades?"

"Top grade in fourteen of sixteen subjects..." I said simply. It sounded like I was bragging about the grades and I hated it. I never meant to brag...

"Impressive..." the man said and wrote something in his writing pad. His brown hair was stiff from the wax that stopped it from getting messy and his grey suit didn't seem to have a single spot of dust. Actually, it looked really uncomfortable. "Any hobbies?"

"I like to dance... And I used to play the piano." I shrugged. I didn't have many interests, really.

"Have you had any other works, Jessica?" His brown eyes met mine again and I hid all my feelings. I was used to put on the poker face. Actually it felt like I used all the time nowadays. I wasn't going to let him make me uncomfortable like all the other interviewees.

"Yes." I didn't want to tell him more.

"What kind of jobs?"

"Restaurants, cafés, shops, hotels..." The list could get twice as long if I wanted to. The man took another sip of the coffee. If he'd wanted to make the interview casual, it didn't succeed. I looked at the clock on the wall behind the businessman at the other side of the table and sighed.

"Do you think you'd be able to handle a job like this?" It wasn't a patronizing question, more of a way to make me talk more. He was just doing his job and was supposed to consider if I was suitable for the job. Obviously, I wasn't doing a very good job when it came to make a good first impression.

"Yes, I do."

"Why do think so?" he asked and kept looking at me. Crap, I thought. Open question...

"Because I'm used to take care of people. I'm used to think of others instead of myself. I'm used to planning things and follow a schedule. I've always been taking care of my family since..." No. I didn't want go down that road. "And, if you call my teachers you'll find out that I'm pretty punctual..."

"I'm sure you are..." the man answered and nodded. He seemed to ignore my changing of subject. I got a feeling that this job interview wasn't going very well... Someone spoke into the man's earphone and he nodded again. "Right, I got it, Nate... Jessica? If you got this job you know you'd have to change your appearance a little, right?" How rude!

"I'm sorry?" I said, trying to sound offended. However, the man didn't seem to notice.

"Yeah... We're thinking of color your hair a little..."
