Have you ever experienced a moment of silence that felt like an eternity? I have, and let me tell you, it was one of the most excruciatingly long moments of my life. My face started to feel warm as everyone sitting at the tables gave me not-so-subtle glances. This was one of the many reasons why I preferred to be alone. I tried to turn back around and focus on the line in front of me, but to my disappointment, the line had not moved. Not one inch.
It was clear as day that everyone was still trying to figure me out. This felt no different from how the teachers and the headmaster studied me when I arrived. Unfortunately, my new companion, Sammy, was no different. I had never dealt with this cliche school drama before, and now I was thrown into it. I would have done it in a heartbeat if I could turn invisible right now.
"Can you guys stop being so freaking weird! You're acting like the level-A students are like God or something. They don't care about all of you, so stop gawking at them." Jenna was the first to speak up, realizing the line was not moving. This seemed to snap everyone back to their conversation, but now with a new topic. Sammy grabbed a salad and a water bottle and placed them on her tray.
"Well, I guess we get to sit with Miss Popular." Sammy smiled but was thinly painted to disguise her actual feelings for me. "I'm just going to find us an empty seat outside," Sammy said, directing the conversation between her and Jenna.
Well, this keeps getting awkward...
"Fine with me, but girl, is that all you're going to eat? They're serving your favorite meal this week." Jenna said, pointing to the stir-fried chicken and rice.
"Nah, I'm good. I'm watching my calories. I'll find us a spot before all the tables fill up." She said, keeping the conversation short and cold. Great, what did I do now?
Sammy turned to leave, pushing through the double doors, and went outside to sit just as she had said. However, this didn't stop other curious students from walking out to talk to her privately. They were trying to get the scoop on the new kid.
'I should have left with Fred when I had the chance' I instantly thought.
"No shit." Fred quickly replied, his thoughts and shadow blending perfectly with mine. As I tried to ignore the murmurs and whispers, Jenna grabbed a chicken sandwich and fries, placing them on her tray. I quickly grabbed a plain turkey sandwich and Hot Cheetos. I need to get the hell out of this place.
My mind was already planning an excuse to eat alone and not get wrapped up in all the high school drama. Unfortunately, Jenna could read my face as I tried to plot my getaway. She patiently waited for me to grab a drink from the fridge by the silverware and napkins.
"Don't let Sammy get to you. She's just butt-hurt because Alex knows your name. She has a ridiculous major crush on him like many other girls in our class." She said, trying to make the situation not as serious as the rest of the student body made it seem.
"Although I'm not going to sugarcoat it, I am curious. How did you meet Alex and Rei?" Jenna asked, trying to keep her voice low. She was deeply aware that the rest of the students were still trying to listen to our conversation. They did not make it painfully obvious like the beginning, but their eyes followed our every step.
"I guess their assignment was to come bring me here." I shrugged. I wasn't trying to be vague, but I didn't want to reveal too much information that wasn't necessary to speak about.
"An assignment to come pick you up. You must be special if the level A student came to get you." Jenna said with no hint of jealousy, unlike her friend Sammy. She sounded genuinely surprised, at least as far as I can tell.
