Somedays, I imagined myself as a Hermonie or some skilled magical being from Charmed. I was none of those things. According to Megan, I was better described as the scarecrow from The Wizard of Oz. Unfortunately, I didn't have a comeback for that. Whether magical or not, schooling was never my strength. It was hard for me to focus on a word or phrase because she quickly moved on to the next.

Megan sat before me, holding a pile of flashcards with Latin phrases and other dead languages I had never heard of. She let out a long, exasperated sigh. "Do you seriously not remember this?"

The inscription had random letters and lines I couldn't pronounce. It would spill out like a drunk sailor even if I tried to say these words aloud. I tilted and squinted, hoping the letters would eventually make sense.

"Nope, Nada." I shrugged.

Megan's expression went through 50 shades of pissed off. She was annoyed that I couldn't get a single answer right. However, I was irritated that she didn't just give up and let me rest. "For the millionth time, no," I mumbled, resting my chin on the table.

Megan shook her head in disbelief. Her shoulder slumped as she closed her eyes, trying to figure out another way for me to memorize these ′ magical flashcards.′ As we sat in the library for hours, she finally said the three true magical words.

"Let's take a break."

"Thank God." I rested my head on the table. My eyes grew heavy, and I welcomed the sweet embrace of slumber until I heard a chair being scooted toward our table.

"I hope I'm not too late. Did you still want me to do your reading?" I lifted my head to find an older woman holding a brown purse. She was dressed in a long purple dress with her back slightly hunched. She gave a sweet, angelic grandmother demeanor.

"Yes, and your timing couldn't be more perfect, Miss Freya. We just took a break from our studies." Megan smiled as she stared with her eyes, almost twinkling. Was she not going to tell me another woman would be joining us?

'Is this old hag still doing love readings?'Fred groaned in disgust.

Before I could question Fred, Freya opened her bag, revealing a deck of cards. She split the black and white deck evenly. Nothing was said as she lit a candle inside a library, mumbling a prayer to a goddess I had never heard of. She began mixing the cards with one hand like a professional dealer. My mind couldn't get over the fact that she lit a candle in a library. Sure, this was a magical school, but did no one care about a fire hazard?

I turned to look at Megan, hoping for some answers, but she appeared mesmerized watching the woman shuffle the cards. I would be lying to myself if I said I wasn't interested and a bit intrigued by the woman's performance. Freya held out her hand, and Megan immediately took it as if she was already expecting the next step.

Freya moved her hand so fast I didn't see her prick Megan's finger. A small droplet of blood fell onto the black and white cards. I expected the blood to stain the white cards, but instead, it was transparent. It was as if the cards absorbed the blood instantaneously.

"When we were younger, you mentioned Alexander Count being-" Megan started but was cut down with a harsh shush. The older woman's sweet face morphed into a scowl.

"Stay away from that boy. This will be your last warning."

"But you said!"

"This was before Alex sacrificed his flesh and blood to gain unlimited power." She seethed. "The bond is broken, and you must let him go if you ever want to find true love." She stacked the cards again, appearing to be finished with seance.

'In other words, move on bitch!'Fred yelled loudly in my thoughts.

'But what did she mean by him sacrificing his flesh and blood?'

'You think Alex contained a Soul eater by killing a puppy? Use your brain. How did you think you obtained me?'It was easy to imagine Fred rolling his eyes and giving me a condescending scoff.

"You don't have to be an asshole," I blurted and quickly slapped my mouth. Freya turned her head, shocked. Megan's mouth was ajar, appearing mortified by what I had just said.

"Sorry, I didn't mean you. I was speaking to..."

"Give me your hand, girl." Miss Freya snapped. She snatched my wrist and pricked my finger without my consent. The pain subsided quickly. However, my fear of this woman increased exponentially. Her eyes began to roll back while a trickle of black liquid continued to drip.

"Miss Freya, there is no need to give Mikaela a reading." Megan stammered as she tried to remove the woman's grasp on my wrist. At first, Freya was gentle, but her grip only tightened.

"Did you know individuals who possess Soul Eaters are destined to be alone," Freya murmured as she read the cards carefully. Her fingers flipped the cards at a swift pace. "Hideous creatures they are..."

'Excuse me, bitch?'

"But the cards say something different." The woman said with astonishment, her voice almost giddy. "You are an anomaly, my child. " Freya smirked as she read the blank cards.

"I don't want to know who my soulmate is," I answered before she started reading into my future love life.

"Child, I'm not going to tell you something you already know," Freya said, suddenly touching my face with her cold hands. She leaned close, whispering in my ear. "The both of you have been thinking of each other since your last kiss."

It had to be nonsense. Despite everything I had seen, I was still stupidly trying to justify how she would know this.

"I'm not only suitable for seeking others' soulmates. I can pursue other things...and from glancing at your cards. Your spirit guide cannot speak of contracts of what he has delivered in the past. If you ever want to know the truth, call me." Freya said intensely with an unsettling grin and handed me her business card. She left the table, leaving Megan and I stunned.

"Megan..." I turned to her, hoping she had some explanation. Before she could respond, a voice behind me made me jump a step backward, nearly tripping on my own feet.

"Why are you jumpy?" Alex said, raising an eyebrow curiously. He stood with his arms crossed, waiting for an answer. For the first time, I didn't know what to say.

"I have to study for the upcoming quiz tomorrow, so Alex or Rei can fill in for me," Megan said as she quickly packed her belongings, not making any eye contact as she left. Alex didn't show any concern for Megan's weird behavior despite how painfully obvious it was.

"I would have Rei help me, but he's probably just as anxious about the quiz," Alex hummed. "I guess you are stuck with me again." He said as the corners of his lips revealed a cute dimple. My stomach flipped and turned in a different direction. I think I may vomit.

"Are you okay? You aren't saying anything?" Alex touched my forehead, expecting I may have a fever. His hands were calm and soothing, but it didn't diminish the anxiety that was building from my stomach to my chest.

"Back off! Or she will vomit!"Fred pushed Alex's chest, catching him almost off guard. "Though, that would be entertaining to watch," Fred said, reconsidering his action.
