The moment I agreed to the bartender's favor, time stood still. The music stopped playing, and my vision blurred. It was different from teleporting with Alex. My body felt weak, and the room was spinning. It was as if I had just stepped off a spinning carnival ride.
The moment I took a deep breath, the scent of the hospital hit me. A light beeping sound constantly played. I turned to find a woman with dark brown hair and sunken, pale skin. She had IV lines and a nasal canal tangled around the bed.
"Who is this?" I asked as I analyzed the woman's face. She wasn't anyone I knew or recognized. She has numerous flowers and balloons with prayer cards at her bedside.
"Her name is Elizabeth, and she's been in a deep coma since the accident," The bartender answered, not fully explaining the purpose of our sudden trip.
"Okay, so what am I supposed to do? Wake her up?" I joked at first, but the bartender's unwavering stare quickly convinced me I was right.
"You have to be fucking joking. Do I look like a doctor?" I nearly shouted as my stomach plummeted.
'Why don't you ask her who she is before you willingly travel with strangers, dipshit' Fred growled.
"Scratch that. Who the fuck are you, and how did you even get us here? Are you a witch or a vampire?" I questioned rapidly. Fred rolled his eyes, and an annoyed huff escaped his lips.
"Both, but my abilities have been limited since I turned. Surprisingly, I still have some juice left," she said excitedly. "My name is Kassandra," she added with a duh underline in her tone as she pin-pointed her name tag on her shirt.
"So how am I supposed to wake her up, exactly?" I said, my voice sounding weary as I stood closer to Elizabeth. Her breath was faint despite her vitals appearing normal.
"Elizabeth's, conscious or soul as you spirituals witches call it, is lost. Her body and soul are not connecting, and I need your help to find it."
"How does this exactly help me?" I raised an eyebrow. From another person's perspective, I may have sounded selfish. However, I don't know this woman. For all I know, she could be a serial killer or a woman who drowns puppies.
"In order for you to enter someone else's mind, you also have to open yours. This will force you to face whatever blockage in your mind that prevents you from casting spells." Kassandra held a black charcoal substance and dipped her finger into the powder. She marked the woman's forehead with a circular symbol, murmuring softly.
Kassandra turned towards me, ready to repeat the same marking on me. Fred appeared instantaneously, wedging himself in between her and me.
"Why are you pursuing this, MK? You know Alex won't be happy about this," Fred warned as if Alex becoming upset would have changed my decision.
"Then why can't I cast spells, Fred?"
"How the fuck should I know! As I told you millions of times, you don't need weak spells when you have me!"
"I can't always rely on you. You made that perfectly clear during my first assignment." I shot back, still angry and hurt that Fred had ruined another person's life.
"Astral planning is dangerous. We can be trapped in that woman's mind forever, or worse, she'll be trapped in ours!"
"Mikaela, I don't know who you are talking to, but I'm going to assume it's Fred. I wouldn't ask for your help if I had another option." She held my hand shakily, and as if I answered no, she would fall apart. "This woman has a teenage daughter and a husband who have been waiting for her to wake up. They can't find anything medically wrong with her, so please bring her back. I need you to help me do the right thing for once."
