I was startled awake by a loud and sudden noise. Someone slammed the door with great force. If I had to guess, I'd say it was Megan. She was desperate for my reaction, but I didn't have the energy to give it. She should have tried after I had my coffee. I gave my best performance once I had a cup of coffee with extra sugar and cream.
My phone beeped loudly beside my ear as I settled into a comfortable sleeping position. Finding no point in returning to sleep, I grabbed my phone to check the time.
6:00 A.M.
Megan, you must be an alien getting up this early and a monster for waking me up.
Before I could curl back into the soft cushions, all the lights suddenly switched on. The sudden switch from darkness to bright light was jarring and unexpected. I felt like a vampire, trying to shield myself from burning in the sun. What fuck is wrong with these people. Do they all get up this early?
"Time to wake up." Rei sang. His upbeat and enthusiastic tone did not match my energy whatsoever.
"It's 6:00 A.M.," I mumbled, pulling the pillow over my head.
"C'mon, we seriously have to get going." Rei tugged on the pillow, ripping it from my grasp. Before I could grab the blanket and curl up to sleep, he snatched it away.
"What the hell!"
"I'm doing you a favor. Alex is a cruel mentor," Rei said, shoving my uniform into my arms. He has to be joking.
I sat up from the couch as a tired yawn escaped my lips. I rubbed my eyes, trying to wake up. From the corner of my eye, I watched with slight amusement as Rei paced back and forth from the kitchen. He rummaged through the cabinets like a mother trying to get her kid ready for school.
He wasn't any closer to being ready to leave for school than I was, as he wore SpongeBob pants and a white top. Rei returned with a pear and granola bar, shoving it into a bag.
"We have to hurry..."
"Why? And how do you know Alex is really that cruel?" I questioned as Rei desperately tried to make me move faster. I could not picture Alex, who has the personality of a boulder, possibly being as terrifying as Rei is making it out to be.
"Because he was my mentor!" Rei whispered. His voice was filled with tension and anxiety, as if he was afraid that someone might overhear. Now, that woke me up. Rei was the existing proof of Alex's rating as a mentor. I never imagined what kind of mentor Alex would be like. He couldn't be that bad...
A sudden creaking noise caught both of our attention. We turned to see a door slowly swinging open, the hinges groaning in protest against the movement.
What we found was a very irritated Alex. The way he stood with his arms crossed and his foot tapping impatiently on the ground were all clear indicators that he did not enjoy being late.
"Both of you get dressed." He said with a stern and terrifying voice. Alex was already dressed in his all-black uniform. He was dressed appropriately from head to toe, except for his untidy black hair.
The expression on his face was evident something bad would happen if we didn't do as he said. I didn't want to test my luck this morning with him. However, I figured as long as Rei was with me, it wouldn't be so bad.
Rei let out a yelp as he hurried back to his room, his croc shoes tapping on the floor as he left. My shoulders slumped as I watched Rei disappear. God damn it, Rei. Jenna would have stayed.
The thought of Jenna no longer being in my class left me scared and alone. She was the first friend I had for a very long time. I didn't have to explain anything to Jenna. She just knew what to say. Her presence was a source of comfort and motivation for me to keep going in this Hogwarts school. Now, it felt like I was starting all over as the new kid—a new kid in a supernatural high school with the most popular boy in school. What could possibly go wrong?
