Rediscovering Each Other

It was dark... really, really dark. Darker than your cell, which barely allowed light in from the hall. Darker than those times they sedated you and you were unconscious while they did, uh, whatever it was they did to you.

It was... nice. Peaceful.

You didn't want to leave this peace. It was so quiet, and your body felt weightless. Would it be selfish to ask if you stayed like this forever? Maybe you could pretend that you were finally free, that you were home and you were just sleeping in your bed, your dad somewhere in the house doing something, with Keith sleeping beside you like he always was, and you could forget all your worries and just... float.

It was probably too much to ask for, but you wanted to hope.

So you floated. You tuned out any thoughts in your head and just let the darkness consume you. For the first time in months, there was nobody to make you do things you did not want to do. No more stress, no more expectations, no more pain.

...And, of course, because the universe hated you, your quiet had to be broken.

"...se. I'm sorry I left you. Just please wake up. Plea..."

That voice... that voice was so familiar. It almost sounded like Keith's voice, but that was impossible. Keith disappeared. Keith was gone. You weren't going to see him ever again.

Yeah, that was someone else. Someone that sounded just like him. There were many, many lives in the vast expanse of space. It wasn't far off to assume that some alien could sound similar to him. Exactly like him...

Whatever. You pushed that voice away and continued to float. You tried to go back to that peace before, but more of that voice pushed through.

"...kidnapped my fucking girlfriend!"

"...She's my girlfriend, my best friend..."

"...I'm not going to leave her side..."

Just... stop. You didn't want to be delusional. You knew Keith was gone. The universe just wanted to play tricks on you. Or the Galra. It wouldn't be the first time they did something like this.

God, you were tired.

But no matter how much you tried to bring back that darkness again, it slipped out from under you, leaving you in a reality where light slipped under your eyelids, and all you felt was cold.

It was so cold.

What the hell was happening?

If you had any feeling in your body, you would have shivered. But you didn't. You had to float in the cold instead.

And so you waited. Something was going to happen to you soon. You just knew it. You bared the cold and the light and waited.

After a while, you heard a different voice. The accent was rich, and you curiously tried to figure out who this one belonged to. It wasn't anyone familiar to you. "Her condition is stable. She will not be coming out for another few vargas, so I'll leave her to heal. Will you be joining me, number one?"

"Nah, I'm going to stay here for a bit. You go on ahead." Now that voice was familiar. But no. He was dead. Your mind was playing tricks on you again. You heard an affirmative sound from the previous voice before there was silence once more. You decided to just enjoy the silence again.

Suddenly, the feeling in your body came back, slamming into your consciousness like a bucket of ice water, just in time for you to feel yourself falling forward. You tried to flail around to stop yourself from falling, but your body was weak, and you were unable to move much.
