a week later

She pulls me into the locker room, the whistle blows out on the field, followed by loud cheers.

It's our game verse China today.

I've spent the whole morning anxious and stressed, while Sam seemed pretty at ease, her hands running up my sides as our lips collide against each other's.

It's almost as if we can't get enough, our lips desperately moving in sync.

She's got me backed against the lockers,
my hands gripping her waist while hers continue roaming up my sides.

We'd been benched for the first fifteen,
she somehow convinced me to sneak off for a few minutes.
Said it would help with the nerves.

Hesitantly, I pull away, the both of us practically grasping for air while we catch our breathes.

" We should get back, we should be supporting our team".

" You're my teammate, aren't you?" She raises an eyebrow, like she's just said the most genius thing ever.

" Come on Kerr".

Playfully shoving her, she lets out a chuckle, following me back out onto the field.
We sit down on the bench next to Kyra, watching the match.

Almost ten minutes after Sams been subbed on, she's scored a goal.
She doesn't do her usual backflip, instead she runs for me.

Helping her celebrate, I throw my hands up in the air to which she high fives, a toothy grin on her face before the rest of the girls bombard her with cheers.

It pretty much makes up the whole game, Sam scoring twice while Mary scored a third.
Our defence was really good today, Coach even mentions it in his lockeroom pep talk.

" And England next week, we leave here Wednesday for a Friday game, don't forget" He finishes before walking out the door.

Pulling on my tracksuit pants, I try and avoid the sick feeling brewing in my stomach.
I would have to see everyone again.

" You happy to be home for a bit?" Mackenzie turns to me.

I just shrug, feeling Sams gaze warm on me.

" Not really. I've grown to like it here I guess".

Cortnee laughs, " Yeah well duh, we're just better".

The rest of the girls laugh, tying up my shoelace before stuffing the last of my things into my bag.

I actually hadn't thought much of going home until now.
How awfully mortifying it's going to be to have to face everyone after practically running away.
Anyway, its crept up on me,
I guess you could say I've been distracted.

Catching Sams gaze again, she nods as if to ask if I'm okay, so I nod back, a reassuring smile growing across her face.

Of course it's going to be awkward seeing the old team, let alone having to play them.
I managed to say goodbye to all of them except coach and Leah.

She doesn't affect me the same way she used to,
I'd already told the whole team about our relationship at Monday's training session.

No more sharp pains in my chest when I hear her name, nor do I feel any guilt for leaving without saying goodbye.

" When did they start making uber drivers this hot?" Sam jumps in my front seat, forcing me out of my thoughts.

" Haha, very funny. Coach better not have seen you".

She shakes her head, finishing the rest of the water in her bottle before turning to face me.

" He was talking to Cortnee when I left".

Beginning to drive, I have the radio on gently in the background, Sam humming as she stares out the window.

For the past week we'd been playing tag with who's house we'd stay at, every night.
Tonight it's mine.

" Are you going to see your family when you're back in England?".

I shrug, " I think I'll have to".

" Would you want them to meet me?".

Swallowing the dryness in my throat, I glance over at her before darting my eyes back to the road.

The thought of her and Jake in the same room makes me sick, thinking of all the awful things he could say to her.
All the horrible ways he could embarrass me.

" Oh" She almost shrinks, returning her attention out the window.

" No it's not you. It's them. I'm not sure I want you to meet them. Jake specifically".

Giving me her full attention, she swivels her body to face me.

" He can't be that bad, surely".

" In year eleven, when I had freshly come out to everyone. He made one of his senior friends hold me down and make out with me, to try and prove I was straight".

I keep my eyes on the road, knowing that if I look at her, I'll feel weird for over sharing.
Slightly tightening my grip on the steering wheel.

" What?! Did you tell your mum?".

I shake my head, " I've never told anyone, actually".

She lets out a deep breath, resting her hand on my thigh.
I take one hand off the wheel, Resting my hand on hers.

" Last time I saw him he got physical with me".

She tightens her grip on my thigh, gently rubbing her thumb over my bare skin.

"Fuck. I'm so sorry that happened to you. He sounds like he needs his head pulled in".

I can't help but awkwardly laugh, somehow it's my default to just laugh, nodding.

" I just don't want you around him, you know?".

She leans over the middle console, "I don't really want you around him either, if you can help it", planting a soft kiss on my cheek.

Once we're home, I plant myself in front of the fridge, trying to figure something out for dinner when Sam comes behind me.

Snaking her arms around my waist, pressing her front against my back.

" I probably stink, definitely need a shower".

" I love showers" She says muffled, her face pressed into my back.

Closing the fridge, I turn to face her.
Her hands drop down to my hips, our eyes meet.

" You played really well today, you know that?" I ask.

She nods, " You did too. Should we save water?".

Her lips tug to a smirk while I work out what she means, the way she holds eye contact is enough to make me literally bark.

" I think that's a smart idea".

" Thanks, I'm full of 'em" She cockily laughs, following me to the bathroom.
