In a different place and time
Maybe in another life
I'll bet that baby you and I would have worked
We never get the chance to try
And what makes it worse
Is you would have loved me
If you met me first

If You Met Me First - Eric Ethridge

I caught Jason just as he was leaving his house. He looked at me confused as he was not expecting me today.

"What's up-"

"Punch me," I interrupted him as I stopped in front of him.

"What?" He said confused, "there's no training today."

"I know that," I frowned, "just do it!" Jason looked at me annoyed by my order before shrugging and getting me with a right hook. I fell back falling on my ass. My face stung with pain as it heated up and my tongue throbbed with pain as I accidentally bit it on impact. I glared up at Jason as I rubbed my cheek.

"What?" He said, "you asked for it."

"You didn't have to do it that hard," I retorted as Jason reached out his hand to me.

"What'd you want me to punch you for anyway?" He asked as I took his hand and he pulled me up back onto my feet.

"I had to make sure I wasn't dreaming," I said.

"How's giving you a concussion supposed to let you know that?" Jason laughed.

"Please, like that weak ass punch could harm anyone," I retorted shoving him away.

"Whatever, Mr. You-didn't-have-to-do-it-so-hard," Jason said, mimicking the last part.

"Oh, shut up," I said shoving him again.

"Why'd you think you were dreaming anyway?" Jason asked.

"Well...I asked Mena out," I said hesitantly causing Jason to raise an eyebrow.

"So you finally found the guts, huh? And she didn't take it well?" Jason said as he put an arm around my shoulders and began leading me to the car, "I got something better for the pain than a fist fight, come on."

"That's the weirder part," I frowned, "she said yes." Jason stopped in his tracks and turned to look at me with both eyes wide with as much shock as I had.

"Did she mishear you?" He asked. "Misunderstood, maybe?"

"I don't think so," I replied, "it was pretty straight forward. I said 'go out with me Saturday' and she said 'okay.'"

"Well, that's good!" Jason said, pulling me into a headlock.

"Ow! Hey!" I complained as he began to give me a noogie as I struggled to get out of his grasp.

"I'm so proud, I feel like a mother bird who finally gets to see the baby fly," he said.

"What the hell?" I frowned trying to shove him away, "you never even taught me how to fly."

"Please, who, if not me, taught you all the skills to be a player?" He said, releasing me and shoving me away, "if anything, I taught you how to win her over." I frowned as I rubbed my head. Jason looked at me with an eyebrow raised. "Alright, what are you so worried about?"

"What if I haven't won her over?" I frowned, "I just don't understand why she accepted." Accepting means she's giving up Mikey, doesn't it? Or is she just doing it to make him jealous? She's very familiar with that strategy...

"Does the reason matter?" Jason asked, making me look up at him. "It's an opening." Jason put an arm around my shoulder and began to lead me to the car. "Use it to show her the kind of mate you could be. Till then, let's celebrate and strategize for the big day."
