She leads me through moonlight
Only to burn me with the sun
She's taken my heart
But she doesn't know what she's done
Feel her breath in my face
Her body close to me
Can't look in her eyes
She's out of my league
Just a fool to believe
I have anything she needs
She's like the wind

She's Like the Wind - Patrick Swayze & Wendy Fraser

Couple months later, I turned sixteen and going through the pain of shifting, I would have thought that was it. The hardest pain I was going to go through awakening my wolf was supposed to be the snapping and reshaping of my bones, but the pain didn't end there and it only got worse. You want to know why?

Because I learned something I wish I didn't.

Almost immediately after transforming, the sweet smell of vanilla mixed with cinnamon took over my senses and that was all I could focus on. I abandoned all who were there to support me in my transformation today: Mom, Dad, Jason, Beta James, Beta Female Miranda, and a few of our closest warriors. They had all lent their auras to help ease the pain of the shift. My shift happened in the evening when the sun just started to go down, but instead of thanking them and allowing them to teach me to adapt to this new body, I ran.

It was completely instinctual. I had no idea how I was doing it or what I was doing, but I was managing as I went through the woods ducking trees and branches as I followed the scent that was enticing me to find the source.

The sunset was leaving red streaks in the sky and the smell of salt was strong to my nose, but it didn't stop me from catching that sweet scent.

I was going too fast by the time I realized that the stronger the scent, the closer it's source when I tried to skid to stop only to crash into the giant sand castle and earn a startled cry as I landed on someone.

My eyes widened as I caught sight of Mena pinned beneath me buried in what used to be a sand castle. Having her close, I could now smell her strawberry scented shampoo mix in with the sweet vanilla and cinnamon smell. Her green eyes were wide as she still seemed shocked and confused about the giant wolf over her. Her hair spread around her like a halo around the sand illuminating her face and making her look more and more like an angel.

My heart was racing in my chest and my body was tingling with energy and my nerves awakened with just the sight of her. I don't know how long I stood frozen over her with my gaze glued to her beautiful face as I tried to understand what this meant and why my body was reacting this way. She...

She couldn't be...

Mena was my mate?

No...

There had to be some kind of mistake.

She was in love with Mikey.

She's supposed to be mated to...

Am I mistaken?

My mind was a jumbled mess as my heart clenched painfully and my stomach flopped nervously as I was unsure how to process what lay right in front of me.

I didn't snap out of my thoughts as a hand wrapped around her arm and helped her get out from under me. A low possessive growl rumbled in my chest before I could help it. I looked up and saw Mena hugging Mikey from behind as Mikey stood protectively in front of her and little Nick, who Mena has been helping babysit recently. Nick was crying about his sandcastle. I hated seeing her arms around Mikey. I wanted to kill him, claim what was mine...but I couldn't. He was like a brother to me and she... she might have been meant for me, but she loved him and I...
