That evening at sunset they took a stroll around the back of the estate. They were in the garden gazing into the orange and yellow sky when Iza spotted a pair of dogs chasing a group of fowl towards the barn.
Loud calls from the fowl could be heard amongst the barking. In a panic state, Iza took off after the dogs, trying to stop them from attacking the group.
Loyd ran after her, catching her by the hand after only a few strides, and pulled her into him. Iza threw a fit in his arms yelling to let her go!
"Let go of me! We have to save those birds! The dogs are going to eat them! Listen to them! Look!"
Iza struggled against Loyd's grip, but he remained firm, not allowing her even an inch. Loyd tried to talk to her over her struggle but to no use. Annoyed, Loyd threw Iza over his shoulder and walked her to the barn.
She kicked up a fuss and beat her fist against his muscular back,
"What are you doing? Put me down! What about those birds."
"You won't listen to me so I'm going to show you."
Loyd replied, stopping Iza's struggle and making her wring herself in his arms to look at him. The fading light made it difficult for her to see clearly but seeing the house in the distance get smaller she knew they were heading in the direction of the barn.
Loyd placed her back on her feet at the barn's entrance, where they were greeted by Petunia.
Iza franticly looked around for the birds but was confused at the relaxed state the two were in. Loyd sighed and opened the barn door. The fowl were making their way inside and preparing to sleep for the night.
Iza went into the barn room to look around and verify that the fowl were safe and to make sure the dogs hadn't gotten inside. She didn't see any dogs and turned to Loyd with a smile.
Little did she know that the dogs were just out of sight. With the sight of an unfamiliar face, A growl came from one of the dogs. A voice sounded from behind the two of them;
"Quiet. Friend."
Petunia spoke in a firm tone to the two dogs. Loyd made way for Petunia as she entered the barn room. The two Anatolian Shepherds tilted their heads to the side and slowly approached Iza, sniffing the floor as they went.
Iza was fearful as they approached her, tensing as they sniffed her legs.
"Is it ok now?"
Petunia smiled and nodded saying,
"Yes, this is your first time meeting. They protect the flock from predators and keep people away, that is why they alerted like that."
Petunia moved to Iza's side squatting down and gave the two a scratch around the necks, Iza slowly crouched next to the group and asked,
"May I pet them?"
Petunia nodded her head. Iza reached out her hand and was greeted with fluffy fur and a surprise lick on the face.
Loyd formally introduced Petunia to Iza during this time, explaining that she cared for the flock and lived in the apartments above them.
After the two of them were done greeting the dogs, the fluffy pair went and strategically layed down. The group watched as Fowl walked over them trying to find the perfect place to sleep once again.
Iza laughed
"The dogs have a high tolerance level to let the birds do that."
Petunia laughed along with her,
"Yes, but don't let them fool you, they love those birds."
Petunia went on to explain her duties at the estate; watching after the dogs and flock, collecting eggs, cleaning this section of the barn, and butchering when the time came.
She goes on to tell Iza that the town collectively decided that each resident keep their own flock of runner ducks and gunnies; the town did this to reduce the insect population and decrease the need for chemical sprays on lawns and crops. Petunia pointed to the fowl feet that had small pink rings around them,
"These rings mean that they are part of our flock, if you ever come out and see one that has a different color let us know and we will call for the owner to pick them up. It's not uncommon for them to run about with other groups."
They said their goodbyes to Petunia and headed home for the night. On their way back to the house Iza asked Loyd if she could help out with the fowl. She had always loved animals but because she could barely afford her own expenses, she never had any.
Loyd raised an eyebrow to her,
"It's hard work you know. Are you sure you want to help out?"
Iza nodded her head determined to get permission from Loyd
"I promise to take lots of breaks! Please, can I?"
Iza made an innocent puppy dog look, holding her hands together pleadingly.
Loyd thought the sight before him was too cute to bare. He covered his face to hide his blush and agreed.
The following day after breakfast Loyd walked Iza out to the barn. Petunia greeted them and had the two help her set the flock free to roam the property for the day.
Loyd enjoyed the smile Iza had on her face and asked if she wanted to help with the other animals as well.
Iza was taken aback, she didn't realize they had more animals on the property. She nodded her head with enthusiasm. Loyd rubbed her head and told her to rest first before they went to meet up with Lupin.
Iza took a seat on a pile of hay and took a sip of cool water before handing the bottle over to Loyd. He looked at it for a second and then took a sip as well.
Loyd thought to himself, this was an indirect kiss again, right? What great luck he had. A gleeful smile was on his face. He quickly shook it away, he couldn't let her see him like this, not yet at least.
After a quick rest, they met up with Lupin on the far end of the barn. Lupin was in charge of the sheep.
After introductions, Lupin explained the plan for today. Since spring was coming soon the sheep needed to be brought from the far field to the one closest to the barn so the sheep could be assessed and prepared for shearing.
Loyd grabbed his helmet and fitted Iza for her own before instructing her to hold on as they rode a quad bike to the far field.
Lupin had a larger bike of his own that had a black and white Merle Mudi in the back.
As the sheep came into sight, the group came to a stop on their bikes. The Mudi got right to work and ran into the field greeting the sheep flock's guardians; a fawn Raferiro Do Alentejo with black marking on the face and a brown brindle Estrela Mountain Dog with black marking on the face.
Lupin made a few calls, and the Mudi began gathering the sheep.
"Ok, Now Loyd, Iza you two will make your way to the gate, have it open and ready for us when we come around then make sure to close it after the guardian dogs are through."
The two on the bike nodded, making their way to the correct gate. Now it was time to watch and wait for the herd to come their way.
Lupin called out to the Mudi giving commands, The Mudi worked hard and was able to bring everyone closer to the gate in no time. The guardian dogs trailed behind making sure nothing was following the group as they went.
Iza and Loyd watched behind the open gate as a stampeding herd of sheep made their way through it followed closely by the Mudi, Lupin, and, then the pair of guardian dogs.
They closed the gate, gave a thumbs up to Lupin, and rode back to the barn.
(A/N: Hey! Hope you all enjoyed this chapter! If you want to know more about the breeds of dogs I choose, go to AKC.org and search for them! They are super cool working breeds! The sheep are Merino sheep, which will be important later and no worries I will remind you. In the next chapter, I'll be introducing horses as well!)
