New Years

The next time Nora woke up, it was to a very loud noise.
Or rather very many loud noises.

She woke up and realised that she was still in the car. And something else was different: she was alone.

Those loud bangs again.

Were they gunshots?

She tried to raise her neck and looked out the window.

The sky was lit up with bright colours. Green, red, blue, purple. Fireworks.

Why the hell were there fireworks?

Nora lowered her head and closed her eyes.

Sort out your thoughts. Where are you? Come on, try harder.

Nora couldn't remember anything, everything was so dark and blurred in her mind.

Loud bangs again.

But this time they were different.

Why were they different?

A millisecond later, Nora heard a deafening clang and shards of glass flew all around her.

They were gunshots.

Someone just shot at the fucking car!

That was the moment that finally brought Nora back to reality. Someone had shot at the car. The one she was lying in.

She had been shot at.

Immediately she tried to roll under the front seats, off the back seat, as low as she could. More shots were fired. The sound was so deafeningly loud and reverberated immensely, her ears hurt.

Nora's heart was pounding up to her throat. She tried to remove the shards of glass from her body and not lie down in any, while the shooting continued outside.

She tried to see something through the shot-in car windows, but all she saw was darkness and fireworks. Fireworks that couldn't even be heard anymore, because of the loud shots.

Fireworks!
Was it New Year's Eve already?

That couldn't be, it had only just been Christmas!

Why was she missing so much memory?

Three shots again.

Nora winced.

Fireworks.

Shot.

Red fireworks with orange accents.

Two shots.

Blue fireworks.

Jaq.

Jaq?

"Jaq!" cried Nora, her voice brittle. It felt like she hadn't spoken in ages.

But Jaq responded and immediately turned her head towards her. In her hand she held a gun as she approached the side of the car, firing forward again and again.

Nora tried to press her ears to the back seat, it was so incredibly loud.

"Get out of there, now!" she heard Jaq yell.

Easier said than done.
Nora heaved herself through the car towards Jaq, but every muscle, every bone, every bit of her skin ached.

When she reached Jaq, she opened the door shooting and hid behind it. Nora crouched down beside her.
