Scar POV
Hotguy had just finished tying up the latest bandits. No one escapes the law! They were no match for him. This was why he was a hero. The thrill of the fight. However, villains weren't the only thing he needed to fight. To fight for. He was just a human with superior bowmanship amidst a team of supers. It took him so much blood, sweat, and tears to get where people born with powers had been all along. Even longer to be accepted. Regardless of the challenge, he was the number one hero. I'm Hotguy. Actually Hotguy. Everyone knows my name. Citizens adore me. Villains fear me. This took my whole life.
Despite the fame, life was hard. He got very little pay despite being number one. He had no clue how lesser heroes survived. He felt so bad. He had to have his best friend work three shifts because he couldn't afford food, let alone rent, as a hero. Scar often went to bed hungry. Grian was the only one who knew. To everyone else, life as Hotguy was great. He couldn't even bring himself to tell mumbo of his status, who was like an older brother to both of them. Scar just couldn't. He needed to protect them.
It was his duty to defend the city. Specifically, from the hermits.
The hermits were a team of supervillains. The only team he couldn't stop. They were too dangerous. He started to go over them. Voltage viper, an electricity-based villain known for electrocuting his victims. Redstone, a vampire with control over the mysterious red substance. Enigma, a villainess known for never taking off her hood and superior parkour and swordsmanship skills. Zombie, a bitter undead former hero. Glitch, who has control of technology. The goat, builder of machines of mass destruction. Frozen ember, a cold-hearted blazeborne. The king, who can control anyone with his royal decrees. The avenger, set on avenging anything against his rules. Washed up, who had total control of the ocean. Mother nature, who is nowhere near as kind as she sounds. and, of course, the Admin. Their relentless and bloodthirsty leader. He hated them all.
Just as scar was about to continue his monologue, Redstone and Enigma dropped down from one of the highest buildings. Scar tried not to panic as he was backed into a corner. "Hotguy to tower. Come in tower?"
"Tower here. What do you need, hotguy?"
"I'm backed against a wall with Redstone and Enigma. Can you send backup?"
The tower staff pauses: "backup sent."
A random news crew showed up and started commentating. Really? No help.
Enigma approached from the shadows. "Your time is up, hotguy. We've got you now."
He was cornered between two villains against a wall too high to jump. They had weapons at the ready. He was done for.
I hope grian is okay. I hope my family moves on. I hope...they forget me. I wasn't good enough. I'm not the hero they deserve.
He knew he was dead, but he kept fighting. Pulling out his bow, he nocked three arrows. They sailed straight and true. He had nothing left to lose.
Redstone caught them all in a flurry of dust. It was hopeless. Redstone on his own could do serious damage. With enigma he was screwed. In a last-ditch effort he pulled out his sword. Slash. Slash. It wasn't enough. Faster than he though possible for just a human, enigma held him down. Redstone reached a hand out and slowly peeled the mask off his face. A look of recognition flashed in normally emotionless eyes. Shocked, Redstone fled. Enigma followed suite. Not before taking a hostage, however. Grian, on his walk back from work, was taken in a flurry of red dust. Scar, dazed, looked over the edge just in time to see his lifelong best friend kidnapped. I couldn't save my own best friend. How am I supposed to save a whole city?
Taking a dejected walk back home, scar realized he wouldn't be able to make ends meet. He wouldn't be able to pay this month's rent. He wouldn't be able to live with himself anyways. He looked at the building next to him. Then to the ground. It would be so easy to...no! I can't!
He's dead. There's no way he survives the Hermits. It's too late.

Grian POV
Grian was about an hour from ending his shift. Thank goodness. This is misery. What he hated even more was that this was his favorite job out of the three. He was tired of getting yelled at by managers, customers, and staff alike. He didn't know how he would survive without his boss cracking jokes in the break room.
The bell on the door rang. Grian's face lit up at the familiar man who walked through the door.
"Mumbo! Thank goodness you're here!"
"Great to see you too, g!"
"The usual villainously black coffee with no anything?"
Mumbo laughed: "yeah, g. My perfectly normal coffee."
"Eh...you sure?"
Mumbo jokingly whispered "gremlin." as he handed grian three pounds
"Hey! I heard that!"
Grian totally didn't get his revenge by putting the smallest invisible amount of creamer in mumbo's cup. No! He would never! That's against- wait! Look! A shiny beetle!
For the rest of his shift grian focused on annoying mumbo. Everything else came second. He knew he would get scolded for it later on, but what's life without a little bit of chaos? Especially when you're not on the receiving end.
mumbo needed to go just before his shift ended. Five whole minutes of boredom! At least I got some fun out of it.
Five minutes later Joel came to take his shift. Waving goodbye, he started walking home. Just as he rounded the corner Redstone, the feared supervillain, picked him up and flew away.
I'm dead. I'm dead. I'm dead so many times over.
The malicious looking supervillan put his finger across his lips, telling him to be quiet. "Everything will be alright." redstone never spoke! And when he did, he had a very heavy Brittish accent. One that sounded just like...no. It couldn't be. mumbo would never hurt him.
Would he?
