FLORALS BLOOM AND PETALS FLY AS THE AIR GROWS WARM
Spring was Iris's favourite time of the year. It was always a celebration for her when the day turned to March 21st. She'd rush outside and skip around town, enjoying the breeze and satisfying color's around her as buds sprouted from the ground below. There was sunshine hitting every angle of the pavement and the gravel would heat up like a furnace. Bees would buzz and and birds would fly. To her, it was heavenly.
"Iris, can you come here please?" She heard her mother yell into the hallway. Her voice ricocheted off the walls and into her ears. Iris quickly folded the corner of the page in which she was stuck on as she kept getting distracted and had to restart. She tossed the book onto her sheets as she quickly made her way toward her mothers voice. "What do ya' think?" she said, pointing to a flower arrangement that was wrapped in brown parchment. The sun from the windows shone down perfectly onto the petals, highlighting every crevice and crack of the wooden table. There were discarded petals and leaves scattered having fallen off. The bouquet was a mix of baby's breathe and pink tulips as well as a few yellow daisies.
"I love it.. it's beautiful" Iris complimented her mothers work with a prideful smile. She walked over to the flowers, brushing over them lightly and stroking her fingers through them as if they were soft locks of hair. "You should sell them in the shop, yeah?" Iris suggested to which her mother nodded in agreement. She began to walk out of the sunroom (also her mothers office) when she was quickly stopped.
"Iris honey, please.. change out of that later. Even if you aren't going out." Her mother looked at her up and down, noticing that she was wearing a tank top without a bra and shorts that revealed a little bit too much,
"I'm not going out like this mum, trust me." She laughed before continuing her journey down the hallway and back into her room. She shut the door and flopped down onto her bed, continuing to read her book when all of a sudden, she heard a loud thud from the corner of her room. "Sunny" she groaned, walking over to her feline friend. "No more going on top of my dresser." she picked up the books that her cat shoved off, examining them. "Shit.. gotta return these to the library"
She bent down to pet Sunny, brushing over her orange coloured cat who was now rubbing up against her legs. She let out a little meow before her body vibrated with satisfaction. Iris smiled at the creature before opening up the drawers of her dresser, sifting through fabrics that were folded neatly in stacks. "What should I wear today Sunny?" she questioned the cat as she jumped up onto her floral bedsheets, curling her legs into a loaf position. Finally deciding on an outfit, she began to get herself dressed. She slipped a cropped white shirt over her head before wrapping around a floral wrap top. She shimmied into some oversized jeans before synching her waist with a belt.

She brushed her hair neatly before styling it into a messy high ponytail with two loose strands in the front. She brushed over a few stray hairs, pulling on her ponytail to tighten it— She cringed at the slight tug of her hair. She put on some light eyeshadow and slight layers of mascara before slipping on her shoes and walking town the hallway, her tote back over her shoulder which was weighed down by overdue books.
"Mum, i'm going to the library!" She shouted down the hall as she made her way toward the front door. Her mother quickly rushed out to her, a flower in hand.
"Wait wait!" She yelled, Iris quickly spinning around with her hand on the door handle. "Afterward I need you to come to the shop to work today. Maria decided to take the day off so I need some extra help." She explained, Iris rolling her eyes before nodding and leaving. It's not that Iris didn't enjoy working in her mothers flower shop, it's just that she'd rather be alone in the rows and rows of wondrous novels— pages filled to the brim with words that will take her away to a world where things are different. She found comfort in between each page, how characters would connect and the way that they lived their lives.
As Iris made her way toward the library in town, she stroked over every flower that sprouted out of the dirt. Her fingertips slightly grazed over the colourful and soft natural materials as some petals fell off the stem or out of the trees from above. She took a deep breathe and enjoyed the scent of warm days and pollen filling the air— it was days like these that Iris was grateful that she didn't have allergies during spring and summer time.
"Listen.." Iris began immediately as she approached the front desk and was greeted by the familiar old library lady, in which she had grown to know very well. "I was going to give them back last week but time caught up with me and-" Iris rambled as she pulled out the books from her bag, but she was quickly cut off.
"Oh it's quite alright dear" the old lady croaked with a crooked, sweet smile. "Just make sure you don't ever lose them, yes?" Iris nodded before turning toward the door, then dropping. She turned to face the lady, but before Iris could even mutter anything the lady cut her off with a knowing look. "Yes, you can borrow more book. I'll put it on your sign out sheet." Iris smiled at her, looking back as she began to walk over to the mystery novels when all of a sudden she was shoved back.
She fell to the ground, groaning as she held onto her side which was now sore. "Shit.." she whispered to herself before sitting up and brushing herself off. She looked around to find a boy laying in front of her and books scattered around them— stray papers surrounded them which had fallen out of the old, worn down books. "I'm so so sorry.." Iris apologised as she made her way over to the boy, pulling him up. He held his forehead, his face scrunched up. She began to quickly grab the boys belongings, putting them in a pile before handing them to him. "I should've looked where I was going"
"Nah, you're good" He chuckled before taking the books out of Iris's hands. "I should've been paying attention. I have a bad habit of getting stuck in my head, y'know?" The boy told her sheepishly. Iris nodded in agreement, understanding exactly what he meant and relating to it herself. She peaked down to his books to find one of her favourite reads lying at the top of the stack.
"That's one of my favourites," Iris smiled, putting her pointer finger on the old leather cover. "You have good taste."
"Thanks" The boy smirked as he looked down at the novel. He quickly shoved the books in one hand before holding out the other toward her. "I'm Ponyboy by the way, Ponyboy Curtis."
"Ponyboy.. I like that." She smiled at him. "I'm Iris Novak" She smiles as she shakes his lightly. He looks at her bashfully for complimenting his name. "Say.. you wouldn't happen to be Sodapop Curtis's brother would you?" She questioned, causing Ponyboy to shrink a bit in disappointment.
"Uh yeah, why? you want his number or sumn" He groaned and Iris quickly waved her hands back and forth with a shocked expression.
"No! No! I have no interest in dating your brother" She laughed, causing Pony to look up at her confused. Ponyboy was so used to people asking for Soda's number as soon as they found out the relation between the two. He was known as the younger brother of the superstar Sodapop. Girls would swoon over both of his older siblings whilst he'd sit on the sidelines and watch the show. So the fact that Iris said that she wasn't interested in Soda, made Pony's heart skip a beat. "I just recognised the last name so I thought that maybe there would be a relation of some sort." She smiled before walking backward toward the door, still facing Ponyboy. "See ya' around, Ponyboy" She winked before making her way outside.
