The first time the deep-set blue eyes lay their gaze on Sabito, they lingered there a moment too long. Sabito was someone you couldn't tear your eyes from, he was pretty, he was serious, his smiles seemed to hold secrets on their own. Upon noticing Giyuu's stare, he laughed. His laugh was abrupt, but sweet. It was its own melody, floating in the breeze. His hands were young but calloused already, months of training taking away their smoothness. He held one out to Giyuu then, an offering of friendship.

"I'm Sabito," he said. He held in his other hand a wooden katana. His breath was slightly labored; he had been striking the sword into the air time and time again before Giyuu had arrived by Urokodaki's side.

"Tomioka... Giyuu."

There was a moment of shared smiles.

"Can I call you Giyuu?"

"Can I call you Sabito?" The question was countered as an answer. Another burst of laughter.

"Deal, then."

"Nice to meet you, Sabito."

"Enchanted. Giyuu."

Yes, enchanted. That was the perfect word to describe how Giyuu felt time and time again, whenever his eyes set on Sabito. Whenever his voice made its way to his ears, he was enchanted. Bewitched under some spell that made him want to stay by Sabito forever. He was drunk on Sabito's voice, on his eyes, on his touch. It made him lightheaded in every good way possible, and before he realized it he was deep in love with the boy.

He vowed to say nothing, at first. He didn't want to ruin their friendship. But months spent with Sabito made him so desperate to earn something more than just a smile, a small praise. He wanted more of Sabito. Then they were sent to Final Selection. There was the question of survival, of coming out alive.

Naturally, Giyuu panicked. Would this be the last time he would see him? Would either of them die without Sabito knowing? Was it worth it, to keep it a secret anymore? And then it didn't matter—and then he was kissing him, and then he knew nothing else. Many people say that, maybe, the first kiss was the best: the most magical, the most beautiful, the most special. But it felt like every kiss that followed the first in the years to come were just as memorable, holding their own pocket of space in the clutter of Giyuu's mind.

As it turned out, they both made it out of Final Selection alive, if not in one piece. Giyuu was considerably more injured than Sabito, but matter it did not as they made their way back to Urokodaki whom both considered like a father. He embraced them and they fell into his arms, tired but content. The years to follow happened in a daze of constant fighting and sleepless days. Between missions and training, they sought each other out for the small bits of affection they had time for. None of it felt like enough. Not the brief cuddling or the small stolen kisses, it wasn't enough to satisfy either of their want to be with each other. But it wouldn't be long.

It came, eventually, paired with a practically insurmountable amount of suffering along with it. A side dish of lost limbs. But it was there. It was theirs. And they found that the time they now had together was to be spent at its utmost pleasure, to be spent together. It felt wonderful. It felt right.

From their first kiss; their first hug, to the first moments of peace after almost a decade of fighting—and everything in between—and all it after—before, during, after, everything. All of it. Their first, their last. The first smile, the last glance.

They had four years to live after the fight. It wasn't enough; it was more than enough.

And to the last kiss they shared? It was their first. It was the most precious. Held in their hearts as it slowly faded and the last breaths of air were inhaled and never let out. And still, one hand in the other's. Like the first time they held each other, as Sabito guided him through the training. It was all the same. It was all beautiful.
