"A candle?" Sanemi asked, cocking an eyebrow at the box. "We have electricity, Obanai. I don't see any reason for this."

Obanai scrunched his nose, clearly disagreeing. "They smell nice. And are aesthetically pleasing."

"Ah? Didn't realize you were so focused on appearance," Sanemi remarked, opening the packaging and taking out the wrapped candle. He got rid of the plastic, placing it in the candle holder. "Aesthetically pleasing?"

"Yeah." Obanai moved to sit beside Sanemi, batting away the plastic wrap. He picked the candle up gently, inspecting it. It was simple, a bit thick in girth but otherwise a typical cylinder. Nevertheless, he was content with it. His eyes flicked down to the box, scanning over the part that commented about a forest-y incense. That had been the second reason he'd gotten it.

Sanemi's brows furrowed, unable to understand it. "It's a lump of wax that you set on fire. How is that aesthetically pleasing?" he huffed.

"Stop saying that, you're getting so repetitive," Obanai chided, elbowing Sanemi. "Anyway, if you hate this so much, it's your loss. I'm gonna bring it to the kotatsu."

He stood, leaving Sanemi questioning his boyfriend's choice in decoration. In the living room, Obanai settled down, gently putting the candle on the middle of the kotatsu. He adjusted the stand, making sure it wouldn't topple over, before going in search of a lighter.

Sanemi seemed to have resigned himself to the random candle being a new occupant of the apartment and was throwing away the packaging.

"I mean, it is cold," he hummed. "But one candle will hardly do shit, so I'll make something. Want tea? Or cocoa? Coffee?"

Obanai agreed something incoherent, searching the drawers for the lighter. When he found it, he bustled over to the candle, cautiously lighting the wick. It lit and the flame flickered, before settling. Smiling, Obanai put the lighter away.

"I asked you a question," Sanemi grumbled, not appreciating his response. In the end, Obanai made him pick a drink, and he sighed. But he chose one regardless, boiling water. When he finished, he brought the hot tea to the kotatsu, putting the cups down carefully.

Thanking him, Obanai blew lightly at the liquid, picking it up with both hands. "Doesn't the candle look nice?" he insisted, waving a vague hand over it.

"As long as it doesn't burn the apartment down," Sanemi retorted. But he nodded either way, his gaze trailing up to Obanai's face. The heterochromic eyes glowed from the flame of the candle, and it had its own charm. Although that didn't quite excuse the chance of a fire.

Obanai murmured a reassurance that no houses would be burned down, sipping his tea slowly. "It's raining, anyway," he reminded him. "We'll be fine."

"Sure." Despite his less than comforted response, Sanemi allowed himself to relax to the gentle pattering of the rain and the flickering of the candle. He watched Obanai, expression softening at the look of peace on the man's face.

"What?" Obanai asked, when he noticed Sanemi staring.

Sanemi took a moment to respond, finally drinking his own tea. "Uh, nothing. Is this a date?" he teased. "Just need some flower petals."

"You're an idiot," Obanai said affectionately, shaking his head. "Tea and a candle is hardly a date."

"Yeah?" Sanemi put his tea cup down, urging Obanai to do the same. Then he tugged the man onto his lap, draping the kotatsu's blanket over their legs. He wrapped his arms around Obanai's torso, resting his chin on his shoulder. "Candle, tea, and... cuddling? Or still, no?"

Obanai tilted his head back, a smile playing on his face. "Whatever you say," he conceded, turning slightly to press a kiss to Sanemi's temple. "I wouldn't call it a date, but if you really want to."

"Yes, definitely," Sanemi said firmly. A grin of his own was pressed to Obanai's neck, words coming out muffled. "Maybe a couple more candles would be nice. One will burn out quickly."

"Look who's getting fond of candles now," Obanai commented, shifting so he could turn on Sanemi's lap, facing him now. He shivered at the cool air that hit him as he left the warmth of the kotatsu, but ignored it in favor of tightening the embrace.

Humming, Sanemi tipped Obanai's head down to catch his lips into a proper kiss. "No, it's for a ritual," he told him confidently, teeth tugging gently on Obanai's bottom lip.

"Hm. And what for?"

Sanemi considered this. "To bring us somewhere where no one else can bother us."

"That'd be nice."

"Yeah. And with nothing flammable. So that you can have as many candles you want without burning us to crisp," he decided. He switched to pressing lazy kisses to Obanai's neck, nuzzling his skin.

"Well, thank you," Obanai laughed. "And Kaburamaru?"

"Oh, yeah." Sanemi looked up, about to comment on the snake. Then he paused, shifting to peek over Obanai's shoulder to stare at the candle. "Is the smell from that? The tree smell."

"Tree smell-?" Obanai started, before understanding dawned on him. "Yeah. Do you like it?"

"'s fine. It really adds to the rain," Sanemi approved, nodding. He lifted a hand, cupping Obanai's cheek and coaxing him forward into another kiss. After a couple minutes of chaste, aimless conversations of kisses, Sanemi hummed, pulling back. "Obanai?"

"Yeah?" Obanai's hair was mussed now, and it stood out with the candlelight framing his silhouette. Sanemi reached up to card his fingers through the tangled black locks.

"I kinda like the candle. The lighting's nice. It suits you."

Obanai raised an eyebrow. "Aesthetically pleasing," he echoed, from earlier, "isn't it?"

"It is. I guess." Sanemi glanced at the candle. "Just a bit. But it's less about the candle and more about— About how you look in it."

"Everything's about how I look in it, is it not," Obanai said flatly.

Sanemi's brows scrunched together, a bit frowny. "Since when did I say that?"

"You don't approve of things until it passes some make-Obanai-appealing test, or something."

"Ah?" Sanemi's lips quirked into a smile. "No, I think you look appealing as is. It's just, if the candle looked stupid here, I'd throw it out. Useless if there's nothing to gain from it. But good lighting's always nice, right? Makes your features stand out."

Obanai huffed. "Starting to consider getting rid of the candle. Was that your plan all along?"

"Maybe."

"Dumbass."

"We can keep the candle."

"I will."

"Dammit."

"You said you liked it?"

"I like you."

"Dumbass."
