Sanemi followed Obanai's gaze to Mitsuri who stood talking to Shinobu across the yard.

"Do you like her?" he asked, raising an eyebrow at Obanai's flushed face.

"WHAT?! ...No!" Obanai insisted, turning back to Sanemi and shaking his head. "I don't!"

Sanemi gave him an incredulous look. "Are you going to keep lying?"

"...yes," he decided, glaring at the ground. Then he paused and looked back up at Sanemi. "Do you like someone?"

Sanemi gave a start. Yes, yes he did. "No, I don't," he said, frowning.

"Sureee," Obanai said, rolling his eyes and crossing his arms. "Then why did you flinch?"

"I wasn't expecting the question," Sanemi said, lying through his teeth. He flicked Obanai's forehead. "You're the simp, I prefer not to indulge in relationships."

"I'm not indulging in shit. I don't like anyone," Obanai said, promptly going back to watching Mitsuri.

Sanemi sighed, a sinking feeling rising in his chest. God, and he had thought he had a chance.

He didn't mind, really, the fact that Obanai found no interest in Sanemi. Or just men, in general. Relationships like that would only bring greater consequences. But he couldn't help feeling constricted whenever Mitsuri was around—her angelic nature, shining like a beacon. She was Sanemi's exact opposite, a bubbly, beloved force of nature. Sanemi, on the other hand, was disruptive and aggressive, usually would pop up in a conversation about someone's least favorite Hashira. It wasn't a mystery as to why Obanai favored Mitsuri. But it hurt, it really did.

But he pushed it down. Which was how he tolerated it, mostly. It was like a system. To not feel. The second he saw Mitsuri, he had to turn away. Give himself a breath. Turn back. There, it was fine, yes? As long as he kept himself in control, it was fine. Obanai was happy—it was nice seeing him more upbeat given that it was a lot harder to find anything to make you genuinely happy now. So it was fine.

Days, weeks, months, years, they passed in a blur. Somehow, Sanemi's feelings never changed. It was irritating. Why was he like this?

And then there was a pause in the world, almost. The demon occurrences had suddenly stopped. Nezuko had overcome the sun.

With this change, Sanemi's heart decided to explode upon himself, bursting his feelings through his body. It was as if, without the constant pressure of death, all the times he had pushed himself down had pressed back against him, released.

He made up his mind, finally, to tell Obanai. It was a now or never, wasn't it? Obanai didn't return his feelings, that was a given. But it was fine, Sanemi already knew that. He just wanted Obanai to know that he really meant a lot to Sanemi, meant more than he could ever have realized.

It was dark. Night was approaching, but Sanemi finally found some time to take away to talk to Obanai. He found him quickly—the two not being far from each other. They made small conversation as Sanemi took his time to gather the courage the blurt out a confession.

Obanai seemed to notice something odd about him because he said, "Are you alright? You look nervous."

Sanemi shook his head. "Fine. Just tired from training all day."
