It was crowded. Hot, stuffy, and crowded. Shinobu ducked away from Sanemi and Kanae, leaving them alone as she sought out her girlfriend. After a moment, she spotted pink and green amongst the intricately tied black hair of the other women, and she sidled over. Mitsuri paused in her conversation to smile at Shinobu. Instead of returning the greeting, Shinobu hissed, "Why are we here again?"

Pouting, Mitsuri said a quick goodbye to her friends before taking Shinobu's gloved hand and leading her to a balcony, guiding her through the open door so that they stood outside, the cool air of the night much needed.

"Don't like it?" she asked, turning to lean against a pillar, facing the door that muffled the music from inside. "If you want to leave early—"

Shinobu shook her head, joining Mitsuri. She adjusted her dress, glad she hadn't picked a big, puffy one like Mitsuri. "It's just boring. I don't want to ruin your fun, and Kanae seems to enjoy it too, it's just... not my thing," she sighed, lifting a hand up to fix Mitsuri's hair, tucking away stray strands. "Also, it's so warm inside. Winter isn't supposed to be so hot."

Mitsuri flashed her a smile. "You say that as if you don't apply." She leaned into Shinobu's hand when it caressed her cheek.

"Mitsuri," Shinobu scolded, though she smiled vaguely. She stepped forward, batting Mitsuri's dress aside so she could kiss her, briefly. "I'd stay outside and let you do whatever, but I'll freeze in these clothes. Melt inside, though..."

Mitsuri hummed, spinning Shinobu around so she faced away from the balcony railing. Fitting her hand on Shinobu's waist, she pulled her closer, giggling as she swayed slightly to the dim music behind her. "I can go find a jacket for you," she offered, though she made no move to stop her clumsy dancing. Shinobu allowed herself to be dragged along as Mitsuri thought for a moment, trying to remember if she'd brought a sweater with her.

"I probably have something with me," she said slowly. She dipped Shinobu down, then followed her half way to touch the tip of their noses together, smiling. "If not, we can ask your sister... Maybe Iguro-san? He's always cold, so I bet he probably has something to spare. He's also on the smaller side, so it wouldn't be too big for you, too."

"It's okay," Shinobu assured her, yelping when she was suddenly spun around. She stumbled, struggling not to step on Mitsuri's dress before she was steadied. Pausing, she peeked over Mitsuri's shoulder into the room. The song had changed again, and some people were shuffling in front of the door of the balcony, squeezing through the crowd. "I'll probably stay out here, though."

"Okay..." Mitsuri turned, letting Shinobu go, and looked inside as well. "We can leave early, though. There's nothing we have to stay here for, so if you want, I can call someone to pick us up or something instead of asking Kanae-san for her car again."

Shinobu nodded. "She'll probably go with Shinazugawa-san, though. Uzui-san is hosting another thing at his house that Kanae and the boys are going to, I think. I declined the invitation, but if you're going...?"

"No, no," Mitsuri agreed, taking her hand and smoothing out the glove. "I didn't want to stay the night, since they can be a little... uhm...?"

"Overbearing. Chaotic," Shinobu supplied. "Stupid."

Mitsuri suppressed a laugh, shaking her head. "I think they'll have alcohol, and I don't want to end up roped into that. Knowing myself, I probably won't decline it."

Shinobu sighed, though she agreed. "Probably."

"So, we go home early?"

"Fine. You do whatever you want inside and text me when you're ready to leave, 'kay?"

"Okay!" Mitsuri kissed her again, smiling brightly as she bounded back inside and joined the group of girls. Shinobu watched from outside for a moment, then turned to gaze up at the darkening sky.

Around an hour later, Mitsuri texted Shinobu—who had gone back inside when she'd started shivering—and they found each other at the entrance. Already having explained to Kanae, who allowed her to take the car, Shinobu and Mitsuri were on their way. With only a little debating, they decided on Shinobu and Kanae's apartment (Mitsuri said that her siblings probably had their friends over for sleepovers, therefore there would be a lot of children to not wake up).

Forty minutes later, they pulled up at the apartment. A bit of awkward bustling later, they managed to get Mitsuri inside without damaging her dress. In Shinobu's bedroom, they gladly exchanged both their dresses for robes after quick showers. Then they made a detour to the kitchen-slash-living room, snagging mugs for hot chocolate as Shinobu turned something on the TV.

For a while, they contented themselves with watching and talking, eventually forgetting completely about the movie in favor of their conversation. Somewhere through the night—around midnight—Mitsuri left to rummage through her bag, coming back with a jewelry box. She handed it to Shinobu.

"What's this?"

"Early Christmas present. Not your actual one, because I originally bought it for myself, but I was gonna forget to give it to you, if not now," she explained with a nervous smile.

Shinobu opened the box, curiosity stirring. Inside was two rings—ones Mitsuri used to wear. They were silver, simple without anything fancy. Shinobu looked up, surprised. "You're giving me these?" she asked, a smile rising on her face.

"Yeah!" Mitsuri said, returning the smile with a sheepish, but wide grin. She helped Shinobu slip them on, holding her hand and squeezing it affectionately. "They've always been a little tight for me, since I got them a while ago, and I remember you asking about them when I stopped wearing them... It's a sort of last minute thing, and not what I'm actually giving you, since they're already used and—"

Shinobu cut in, leaning over to kiss her cheek with a laugh. "They're great," she insisted. "I love them—and knowing you also wore them before. I'd even be happy if you hadn't gotten me anything else. Anything you give me is perfect, I promise."

Mitsuri bit back the smile that creeped up her face anyway, her cheeks flushing as she shuffled out of her chair, discarding her blanket to scoop up Shinobu in a hug. "Aaah- I love you," she squealed, spinning her around until Shinobu insisted to be put down.

"Here—let's go to my room," Shinobu said gently, picking up the blankets and turning off the television. She took Mitsuri's hand and led her to her bedroom, closing the door behind them (in case Kanae came back home) and sitting on her futon. Mitsuri flopped down beside her, all smiles and excitement.

"I'm not tired," she admitted, draping herself onto Shinobu. "I don't wanna sleep yet!"

Shinobu laughed. "Alright," she allowed. "Sit up, love."

Mitsuri obeyed, eager for entertainment. Shinobu cupped her face, tugging her gently forward and pressing their lips together. The first kiss was soft—chaste and featherlight touches—but when Mitsuri pulled her onto her lap, Shinobu tilted her head slightly, deepening the kiss. Mitsuri's face bloomed pink but she returned it with enthusiasm, eyes squeezed shut. Her hands snaked over to Shinobu's waist as they parted, breathing unsteadily.

"Merry Christmas, Mitsuri," Shinobu said, smiling and touching her forehead against her lover's.

Mitsuri's lips curled sweetly and she took Shinobu back into another kiss with a muffled, "Merry Christmas," between breaths.

"Love you so much."
