Once they get inside the bar, they're introduced to a couple of the senior members of the society and they're given pronoun pins, which they pin to their shirts and dresses before introducing themselves.
"Charlie Spring?" One of the girls repeats his name back to him. "Have we met before? Your name is familiar."
"Um, probably not met me, but you might have heard my boyfriend talk about me." He coughs awkwardly. His reputation as Nick's lad clearly precedes him. "You might know him, he's a second year too. His name is Nick Nelson?"
"Ah, sure I know Nick," the girl says brightly. "Nice guy. Very vocally bisexual, which is always refreshing to see. We don't get a lot of guys who are as open and transparent about it as he is."
Charlie beams with pride. "That's my Nick."
"Aw, it's actually really nice to meet you," the girl says, then offers out her hand. "I'm Jess, fellow bisexual and avid listener whenever Nick talks about you. He's cute.""I agree," Charlie laughs. "He's sorry he couldn't make it tonight, but being rugby captain means he had to go on that social rather than coming here."
"Two worlds colliding: the rugby world and the bisexual world," Jess says solemnly. "Lovely to meet you anyway. I'm sure we'll chat more in the future but I've got to shoot off and do, like, actual society member things. See you soon!"
She disappears off and they all watch her walk away, but nobody more so than Polly. Charlie shares a quick glance with Kate before he gently elbows Polly in the ribs.
"See something you like?""No," Polly answers a little too quickly. "I mean, don't you? She's really pretty."
"I'm gay," Charlie deadpans. "But she is very pretty."
"Urgh, I love girls," she says, a little too loudly to be casual, flopping down on a chair and taking a long pull of her drink. "Can we get some sad shots?"Kate wraps her arms around her shoulders. "Hey, no sad shots. We've been here five minutes, love. You'll find someone else to fall in love with by the end of the night, I'm sure of it."
Polly pouts. Even when pulling a face, she's still so unfairly pretty that it's almost comical. "Okay, fine. Someone please go and get me a shot though, I need it for confidence."
"What on earth have you got to be worried about?" Kate asks incredulously. "It's literally the beginning of the night and you're so hot it's not even fair."
"It's true," Charlie agrees. "I don't even like girls, Poll, and let them tell you..."
"Shut up," she interrupts, but she's smiling. "You don't need to stroke my ego to get out of buying me a shot."
"Oh, I'm buying us shots," Kate says, then disappears towards the bar with a grin. She actually buys them two shots each, and even though it's only Sourz, it's been a long time since Charlie has been drinking to get drunk and he winces as the cherry flavoured liquid burns his throat. Polly, on the other hand, gets them down her like she's drinking water, then immediately orders two more.
Charlie's going to have to keep an eye on her.
They do some more mingling; Charlie meets two other freshers who live in a building not far from his and they end up chatting for an hour or so about RuPaul's Drag Race and why the later seasons have been utter shite. They swap Instagram handles under the guise of arranging a Drag Race watch party plan, then they're all summoned to get on the coach to take them into town.
Even though they're all explicitly told to take their own seats, Charlie finds himself squished between his flatmates on a two-seat close to the back. It's not a very long journey, maybe fifteen minutes, and in that time they sing a medley of Steps songs. If any outsiders could hear them and wondered what society they were all in, they could probably hazard a pretty good guess, particularly based on how many people take the harmonies extremely seriously.
