In an unsurprising turn of events, Uni of Leeds win the match.
Charlie leaps to his feet as the final whistle blows and jumps into Harry's arms, letting the taller lad lift him off his feet as they cheer and yell Nick's name at the tops of their lungs. It was a close game, less than five points between teams by the final score, but one of the new recruits managed to score the winning try with only a couple of minutes to spare.
"They won?" Manrika screeches, poking her head between the two of them. No matter how many times both lads explain the rules of rugby to her, she can never remember them. They're lucky if she remembers which side each team is playing on. "They won! Nick won!"
Harry sets Charlie back down and pulls Manrika into his arms, just as Caitlin appears next to Charlie and cautiously pulls him into a happy hug. Down on the pitch, they can see their boyfriends pulling each other into a ridiculous embrace of their own, then one of their other rugby teammates jumps on them both and knocks them to the ground. It makes Charlie grin even wider.
"They played well, did our boys," Caitlin says to Charlie, rubbing her hand over his shoulder. "Nick's good, isn't he?"
"So's Pete, to be fair." Charlie watches and snorts as Pete smacks a kiss onto Nick's forehead before prancing off to see Johnny. "The pair of them work well together on the pitch, it's nice." He hip-checks her lightly. "That used to be me and him, you know. He's replaced me with your boyfriend."
Caitlin snorts. "I mean, he can have him if he wants. I bet their shared bed would be rancid. "
Charlie cackles. "Yeah, probably." He tilts his head towards the steps. "Shall we go down and remind them whose they really are?"
"Lead the way."
Along with the rest of the gang, they trot down onto the pitch. Around them, the field is filling up with spectators relating to both the teams and tapering off to their respective friends and partners.
As he's captain, it's not easy to get to Nick because he's usually pulled from all sides after a game – shaking the other team's hands, talking with his coach about how the match went, and hyping up his own players – but Charlie is more than happy to wait, standing there with his chest puffed up with pride as he waits for his boyfriend.
His winning captain boyfriend, no less.
Pete jogs over and waves at them all before he pulls Caitlin into a hug so tight that her feet also lift off the ground. They cling to each other in a way that feels too intimate for Charlie to watch, so he takes a step back towards Claire and raises his eyebrows at her.
She raises one back. "I don't know what you're pulling that face at me for. This is exactly what it's like being around you and Nick."
Charlie snorts and shrugs. He can't even apologise because he intends to snog the living daylights out of Nick the second they're close enough. "I guessed as much."
"Speaking of." CIaire waves over to Nick, who finally re-emerges from the commentator's box. "Nick!"
Nick pauses and cranes his neck, like he can't work out where the voice is coming from. Charlie intends to change that immediately, suddenly and ridiculously unable to stand being apart from Nick for a second longer.
"Nick," he yells. "Over here, Nick!"
Nick's smile is brilliant and bright as he jogs over, his arms wide. He barrels into Charlie as Charlie wraps him around his neck, then suddenly his feet aren't on the ground anymore as Nick scoops him up with one strong arm.
Charlie's brain short-circuits as he wraps his legs around Nick's middle. Nick stumbles a bit but it's still relatively easy for him to swing Charlie around proudly, his free hand tugging him down by his chin for a kiss.
Nick just picked him up with one arm. One.
Charlie might be dead.
His brain crashes so hard that he doesn't even kiss back for a second, until Nick pulls back with a wet smack and frowns at him.
"What's up? Did I hurt you or something?"
"No," Charlie squeaks, his cheeks aflame. His grip on Nick's shoulders tightens. "You just... you... with one arm , Nick." He bites his lip. "That was so hot ."
