Ha-na's breath rattled through her chest, bouncing her knee up and down at a rapid pace out of anxiety. She just got discharged from the doctor's care, now she waited with Ms. Kim in the emergency room waiting area for Geon-woo.The doctor did a few x-rays, looking at her ribs. She was satisfied to hear that nothing was broken, there was only a small fracture in one of her lower ribs, and she'd need to be careful for the next few weeks. She for a split second thought about her tournament coming up, and what that would mean in regards to her participating. She quickly shook her head at the though, reminding herself that she's just happy to be alive along with her best friend.
She wasn't sure how she still had tears left in her to shed. The scene from just a few hours ago kept flashing behind her eyelids, seeing Geon-woo on the ground getting his cheek torn apart by a knife replayed in her head like a loop. She didn't even notice until she opened her eyes back up, that her and Ms. Kim were both holding hands, squeezing tightly.
"Oh, Geon-woo." Ms. Kim choked out, her voice softer and more broken than Ha-na thinks she's ever heard it before. Ha-na snapped her head over, standing up with a quickness as she noticed Geon-woo walking towards them out of the curtained area he had just been laying in.
He looked so tired, so defeated, and so hopeless. Tears once again filled her eyes, recognizing the look in his. She wanted nothing more but to turn back time, never urging Ms. Kim to call Geon-woo. Maybe she would've forgotten in the midst of the moment. Maybe he would've stayed away for awhile longer. Maybe Ha-na would be the one with the soon-to-be new scar on her right cheek, instead of him.
Ms. Kim dragged her feet as she walked towards her son, ever so gently placing her hand against his bandage. "Oh, honey. I'm so sorry." Her voice cracked as she scanned his face, more than likely noticing the same exact dispirited look stained into his eyes as Ha-na did.
"No, Mom, it's okay. I'm okay." He nodded his head, wrapping his arms around her lightly, as if he was scared he was going to hurt her like the other men did if he squeezed to hard.
They stayed in the embrace for a moment, soaking in each other's presence. Trying to remind themselves that yes, we are still alive. That's all that matters, right?
As Geon-woo's arms dropped from his mother's shoulders, his eyes fell behind her, meeting Ha-na's tear-filled eyes.
His heart clenched, he had seen her cry too much tonight. Her cries for him were almost more traumatizing to him than the actual knife going into skin. He couldn't help the lump in his throat as he watched her head fall, a small sob that she had been trying to hold in escaping.
"It's okay." He whispered, taking a couple steps towards her before bending down a bit, wrapping his arms around her waist. Again, being so gentle it barely could've been considered a real hug. He didn't forget about her poor ribs, wincing as he remembered the bear-like fucker nearly crushing her.
