Uncertainty

And there it was again. That thought Papyrus hated, the one he would rattle out of his skull any moment he got. This time it hit him like a punch in the spine, seeing the smiling face of his flowery friend, one that seemingly cared so much, one that he was lying to.

It wasn't forever, he had to remember. If it all went wrong, he'd wait for the human to come, to trudge through the snow with determination, to make mistakes and fix them, and for it all to happen again. He knew Flowey would remember, but the gut wrenching feeling in his would-be stomach only grew when he thought about it too much.

No, instead, he kept his thoughts factual, something he'd only recently had to learn how to do as he walked the snowy path to the back of his house. The door wasn't locked anymore, he didn't have a key, but inside lay something that would change his life. Opening with a creak, the small gust of wind brushed against his exposed bones, making him shiver, a rattling echo following. The room was basically spotless when he first found it, papers covered in dust and that strange font he'd found in some of the books, but most importantly, it had blueprints. Blank ones, ones for outdated machinery, and ones that looked all too familiar. This is where the brunt of his research went, a wall covered in MTT magnets and stickers holding up crazed scribbles that would soon be his masterpiece.

He sounded cool, Papyrus thought, like a mad scientist.

But now wasn't the time for aesthetics, reaching into his battle body, he grabbed his notepad, methodically ripping off the pages until they had their own place on the wall. There were some he threw away entirely, some things he scribbled out, and others he'd adorned with golden stars for being so useful. He'd given himself a few, too. he was doing all the work after all.

What remained was a chaotic yet organized wall of paper, all holding some fact or theory on one thing.

Souls.

The first time he'd learned about them as a babybones, he'd thought nothing much of them, just an urge to protect it from all the wrongdoing. But now, with all his new knowledge, he considered it a tool. A resource that would help him do something impossible, something never done before.

At least, he'd hoped.

His focus landed at the very center of the chaos, where a red inked line lay completely flat, steps all along it. This was his recipe, his blueprint, his Frankenstein's monster. It started simple, strengthening the soul as much as it may allow. Then, as it continued, the line was dotted with step after step of preparation and cautions that would finally allow him to do what he'd waited for.

What it was all meant to be, maybe his destiny, he thought with a bashful smile, the thing he was made for.

He was going to-

knock. knock. knock.

Oh, no.

Papyrus stood more still than he thought possible, listening intently for the slightest crunch of snow under whatever monster was at the door. He prayed it wasn't Sans or, maybe worse, Undyne. She wouldn't hesitate to break down the door knowing Papyrus was in there. He knew that from experience. It had led to awkward conversations before, yet she was an unrelenting monster. And this conversation would be more than awkward, hell, it might have led him to an asylum if he didn't word it right.

His thoughts came back to him when he realized how quiet it was. Almost too quiet, even. As slowly as he could, he kneeled down, peering into the crack just between the door and the cold ground. Nothing.
Huh, maybe he was going mad.

Still, he shook his thoughts away, he really should get out of that habit, and stared back at the wall from his spot on the floor. It was a strange perspective, he thought, being so small. He couldn't imagine always being so small, having to look up at everyone around him, always feeling looked down upon. Maybe that's how Flowey felt, he pondered.
But that's why he was doing what he was doing.
So nobody would look down at, or on, him again.
