Chapter 6
It was around nine at night and it was very dark so the small party travelling into Kaz’Dorlain found a small cave at the foot of the mountain. It had taken all day for them to walk to where they were now. Ryan, Michael and Liliana were very tired after their battle at the edge of the Forests of Durin and even more so after their long walk to the first mountain that defined the beginning of the mountain range that was Kaz’Dorlain. Ryan propped himself up against the wall and got some food out of his pack, Michael started a small fire in the middle of the cave but a little out of the line of sight from the entrance so not to give away their presence so much and Liliana came and sat next to Ryan. Of the two men she found Ryan the most interesting and more mysterious as he refused to give up much information about his past. Some things she could ask and he would answer and other things he would simply change the subject but that only made her want to know more.
Liliana always liked going to the tavern of Fort Paraneir and talking to the patrons about their past and what they done for a living. For the most part, her life had been in the woods and only after her mother left was she able to leave the borders of the woods and go to town and have conversations with people, with her mother she wasn’t allowed to talk to anyone. She was interested in people’s stories since they revealed things about the three kingdoms she has never seen and only read about in books. She had never wanted to go see for herself because, even for all her power, she didn’t want to travel alone, which was one of her biggest reasons for coming with Ryan and Michael.
“Has Michael always been so serious?” Liliana questioned Ryan for what seemed to be the millionth time, although it didn’t really bother him, he liked talking to her unless it was about the reasons he wasn’t a knight anymore. He had told her the story in minor detail but he didn’t want to explore the event in depth with her.
“No he hasn’t. He used to be very talkative and would joke about everything.” Ryan answered.
“What happened? Or is it time for a change in subject?” Liliana joked making fun of how many times it had happened that day while they were travelling.
Ryan laughed a little at her joke, he felt a little bad for not being able to answer her, if he could he would tell everyone he met but he was afraid that they would change and treat him differently just like Michael. “It’s complicated. But I’m interested in what racial traits you’ve picked up since your both human and elf.” he really was curious; cross-races were a rarity and most were unique in the traits they developed from their parents.
Liliana smiled a bit since he did change the subject but she didn’t mind, “Well I inherited my looks, my magical powers and my desire to live in the woods from my mother, and from my father I inherited the thrive for adventure, but I’ve never been on any, I also inherited the human life span, so, no immortality for me.”
“What about elven sight or wisdom?”
“Nope I didn’t get either. But I’m not dumb.” she said slyly.
“Well we had better get some rest; we will need our strength if we are going to traverse these mountains. I’ll take first watch, and then Ryan, and Liliana can take the last watch.” Michael interrupted, before walking over to sit around from the entrance.
Ryan went to sleep quite quickly. But Liliana saw this as a chance to talk to Michael without Ryan around to stop her, so she got up and sat down near Michael.
“Michael what happened between you two? Ryan seems to know you very well but you don’t seem to be the best of friends and what happened in his past that he doesn’t want to talk about?” she asked.
