There’s something about the way he says those words that has me immediately guiding my eyes back to him, instead of continuing to gaze around the tree house, which has been decorated with candles as a blanket and basket lay in the middle. Other than that, it’s empty. Even though I could probably stare at it all day, I look away from it anyway, my eyes locking with Kade’s as he takes in a deep breath. It causes me to hold my own.
“Justin,” both of us take a deep breath before he continues, the air feeling slightly tense, full of both of our nerves, and I don’t even know what’s coming. “So, I know this is unusual,” he takes a step towards me as I stand, paralysed, “well, I think it is anyway.” Get on with it, Kade. I need to know what he’s gonna say. “But I don’t really care, because I love you, I love you a whole fucking lot and I need for you to understand how much I love you, and I need for the world to understand that as well.” Another deep breath from both of us.
Kade walks closer, ever closer, until he’s standing right in front of me, with an inch between the tips of our noses. And then he does the near-damn unthinkable.
I try to fool myself into thinking that he’s not about to do what I think he’s about to do, as he gets down onto one knee, pulling a little black box out from his back pocket. All I can think is ‘holy shit holy shit holy shit, is this happening?’ as he opens his mouth, saying words that I don’t even hear.
After a moment, his eyebrows crease and his hand I notice has a slight shake to it. “Justin?”
“Huh?”
“I said... Will you marry me?”
Holy shit holy shit holy shit, this is happening. I open my mouth but nothing comes out, no sound at all. Why, words, why do you fail me now?
Kade takes in a shaky breath and I can tell that he’s about to stand up, from the way his back foot moves ever-so-slightly. I hold a hand out, “Wait.” He takes in another deep breath and I find myself doing the same. “Yes.”
“What?”
“I said yes. I’ll marry you Kade.”
“Did you just-“
“Yes.”
The box falls from Kade’s hand and I reach down, ready to pick it up and put the ring on myself. Just as I’m bending to pick it up, I feel a pair of arms wrap around my waist and before I know what’s happening, I’m in the air and the world’s spinning. Kade’s shouts of joy are carried away from us by the wind. “Kade, put me down!” I’m laughing though, constantly laughing as the world continues to spin at full speed.
Eventually, he obliges. “You said yes.” There’s a grin on his face as he states this.
“No shit, Sherlock. Are you gonna give me the ring?” He grins ecstatically at me, picking up the ring box, taking out the ring (that managed to stay put when he dropped it, thank goodness) and taking a hold of my hand, slipping the ring onto my finger.
He stares at it there for a little while, before looking up at me. “I have one for myself. I mean, these aren’t engagement rings, technically, ‘cause they’re for girls and all that, but these are purity rings. It just means that until we actually do get married, we’re gonna be purely with each other. I like that.”
“I like that, too.” His smile is contagious and I find myself joining him.
“Oh but don’t worry, I do actually have the wedding rings picked out for both of us, I just need to actually buy them.” A chuckle escapes my lips at this.
“Do you have a purity ring for yourself?” I don’t want to be the only one who’s promising to be pure before our wedding. His nod answers my question before he pulls out his own ring, which I slide onto his ring finger. “That’s better.”
Kade takes a step forward, and I find myself staring at his lips, which seem to be taking forever to near my own. “Justin.” I murmur something incomprehensible before Kade continues, “I’m going to kiss you.” And before I have the chance to take in his words, his lips are covering my own, the world feeling complete for this extraordinary moment in time.
