“You’ve been barely eating these days, Neve” Trina blurted out.
Trina, Louis and I were having lunch in the cafeteria as usual.
I raised an eyebrow questioningly. I knew that Trina was growing suspicious of my eating habits. She had been watching me like a hawk for the past couple of weeks. So, I decided to play dumb and pretend that I was not doing anything fishy.
“I am eating my lunch, aren’t I?” I asked.
“Yes, the same lunch – an apple, a small bowl of soup and a diet coke- For the past 4 months. Look at you! You’ve lost tons of weight… I think you are starving yourself, Neve. I am concerned” She said and sighed.
“I am not starving myself, Tri…” I said. “I am eating healthy. I eat a heavy breakfast at home, so, I am not that hungry during lunch. You don’t have to be worried about me…”I lied.
“You have been eating that same lunch ever since school started this year. You haven’t touched anything else available in our school canteen. And I am scared” Trina said with a worried expression.
“I know. As I said, I’ve been eating healthy. I have cut out junk food from my diet and I eat lots of veggies and fruits. I am picking up the healthiest stuff I could find in our cafeteria. Everything else sucks anyway! Seriously! You should stop being worried!” I lied again, looking her straight in the eye.
“Alright…” Trina trailed, looking not-so-reassured.
“You look smoking hot, Neve. You don’t have to diet yourself anymore. I’ll give you that” Louis said through a mouthful of pasta.
“Diet yourself? Is that even a phrase?” I teased Louis, hoping to change the subject.
“I’ll show you something that’s not normal” Louis nodded towards a table across the room. It was the popular kids’ table. Sean was checking me out. His eyes slowly wandered from my toe to head. When he caught my eyes and realized that I was staring at him, he gave me a heart melting smile, the one that used to melt my heart into butter. I ignored him and turned to face Louis. Few seconds later, I got a text from Sean.
“You look gorgeous today, love”
“Somebody is having second thoughts” Trina read the text and winked at me. I gave Sean one of my ugliest looks and deleted his text.
“That was expected. After all, she’s more popular than Sean now” Louis gave me a small nudge.
It was true. Losing 70 pounds brought me to limelight. Girls and even some teachers wanted to know what I ate, how much I exercised, how I lost weight and so on while guys showered me with attention I was never given before. It was funny how world changed once I lost weight. I went from being the fat girl people made fun of to the girl guys wanted to sleep with. Even general population was kinder to me. People I met on grocery stores or public transports were chattier. Men allowed me to cut into queues. People who had seen me throughout my life were thrilled. While there were people who were jealous, At that point in my life, I had everything I wanted. I was no longer fat; I was recognized, respected and admired by my peers. At 120lbs and size six, I became prettier on the outside.
However, on the inside, I was a mess. I always thought that once I reach the elusive number of 120lbs on the scale, I would be more confident and happy. I was not. Every time I looked in the mirror, I saw my old fat self. I was terrified of changing my meal plan in fear of gaining weight. I still hated food and the way I looked!
