"And this is our rec therapy room." Timothy said ushering the new employee into the room. The rec room was very plain and boring, except for a few drawings hanging on the white brick wall. By looking at the drawings Ralph would've assumed a toddler had drawn it at preschool. But this isn't preschool, this is the Smith's Grove Warren Sanitarium. Ralph was very young, most people would assume he was in college. He got married at the age of 19 to his high school sweetheart Jessica. They grew up in California together and decided to move to Haddonfield right after getting married. Ralph's parents didn't think it was a great idea, his father said he's heard of bad things happening there, but Ralph didn't really care. The houses in Haddonfield were a lot cheaper than in California, which was one of the main reasons why he and Jessica decided to move.

They had been living in Haddonfield for almost 2 months now. Jessica had gotten a job at a convenience store, and Ralph finally got a job working at the Sanitarium. His mother didn't think it was a good job to work at at the age of 23. But Ralph didn't listen, he doesn't care about where he works, as long as he's getting paid good. And 14 dollars an hour was more than good, it was perfect, so he immediately filled out an application. They had called him the next day letting him know he's got the job. "That was really quick." Jessica said when he told her. "I don't think I've ever heard of anyone getting a job that quickly, you know I'm starting to really think that moving here was the best thing we've ever done."

And Ralph also agreed with her, with houses so dirt cheap and a job paying this much, he and Jessica can finally start a family. "Ralph? Are you listening to me?" Timothy said. He was too busy staring at the drawings on the wall to be listening to what Timothy was saying. "Oh um, yes I'm listening." He said turning around. "Good, we're gonna go head out to the courtyard where the patients can get some outside time." He told him opening the door. Ralph was about to follow, when he stopped to look at the drawings again. One of them had caught his eye and stood out from all the others. It still looked like it was drawn by a child, but it made sense and wasn't just a bunch of meaningless shapes and lines. It looked like a drawing of a woman, her hair was drawn in thick black lines that looked like braids, and her skin was brown. There were initials at the bottom right corner of the page, M.M. "Ralph." Timothy called again, sounding a little impatient. "Oh sorry." Ralph said quickly following Timothy out the door.

As they walked down the long white corridor Ralph finally paid attention to what Timothy was saying. Timothy had been working there since 1978, and seemed to know what he was doing. He also seemed to love his job a little too much, telling him about his favorite parts of the job and things like that. Ralph didn't care about any of that shit, only thing he knew was that bills needed to be paid, and mouths needed to be fed. "It's not as chilly as it was yesterday, so the patients can have some outside time." Timothy was telling Ralph. "Oh, um- what do they do outside?" Ralph asked, not really caring what but wanting to sound like he did. They had reached a metal double door that went outside, the sun was shining through the glass on the door, and when Timothy opened it, Ralph had to shield his eyes. He walked outside with Timothy, the breezing hitting him in the face and tickling his scalp. "So this is the courtyard, where the patients can get some fresh air and outside time." Timothy said. Ralph could not believe what he was seeing, he had expected to see the patients maybe running around frolicking in grass and stuff. But this courtyard didn't have any grass, not one plant. And the barb wired fence made it look more like a prison.

But forget about the courtyard- the mental patients where all wearing white, and they were standing in squares that was drawn on the concrete. Their ankles were chained there so they couldn't move. "Any questions?" Timothy asked nonchalantly. Ralph didn't say nothing at first, to speechless. He knew they were mental patients, hell some of them were probably in here for crimes. But he didn't expect this to be "outside time". "Wow, they kind of look like chess pieces standing out there like that." Ralph said laughing nervously, Timothy didn't laugh and only nodded. "It's for a reason, keep the patients and the staff safe. "Timothy told him. "Safe from what?" Ralph asked still staring at all the patients. "Some of these patients aren't just crazy. Some of them are in here for doing horrible crimes, like killing." Timothy explained. Ralph didn't say anything and just swallowed hard, still looking at the patients. It made him feel a little uneasy to be working with patients who've killed people. "Like him, right there." Timothy said pointing at someone. Ralph followed his finger, it was a man. He stood out like a giant compared to all the other patients. His hair was brown and bit curly, Ralph couldn't see his face since his back was turned. "Who is he?" Ralph asked. Timothy looked at him as if he was just as crazy as the patients. "You must not be from around here huh?" He said.
