Star Light (Sonic Fanfiction)

Chapter fourteen

"G-Green Hills." Tails studdered as they backed up in shock. The whole land was slowly being overtaken by lava tremors as the ground shook and moved. "It's gone..." Blaze spoke with sadness in her voice, Silver putting his hand on her shoulder.

Sonic looked defeated; everything was being destroyed before his eyes. "No." The blue hedgehog said at last, "No. I'm not going to let this end. Not now. Not like this." Sonic stood his ground, turning to the others with his fists clenched. "We get to Eggman's base, and we can fix all of this, right? If what he said is true, then maybe we can fix this."

"What exactly did he say?" Shadow asked coldly. "Well," Tails started to explain, "while we were gone, most of us were in a different dimension. Most of the time. Anyways, according to Dr Eggman it's a dimension in between dimensions, one that holds everything together. To sum it up, whatever happens there somehow either keeps the other dimensions in order... Or in chaos. Like now."

"The sol emeralds!" Blaze said in fear, covering her mouth, "What if-" "There's no time for what ifs." Sonic cut Blaze off, "If we can stop Eggman, I think we'll be able to fix everything... We can't let him win." "I think if I can get to the portal, I should be able to turn it on and send us back." Tails said nervously.

"Great!" Sonic exclaimed, "Now we just need to cross a field of lava, no biggie." "Yeah but according to my calculations those geysers are going so high they may even pose a threat high up in the air." Tails explained. Sonic took a deep breath, "Then I guess we'll just be going on foot!!"  

Sonic quickly zoomed down the cliff ledge. "SONIC!! BE CAREFUL!!" Tails called out, reaching their hand forward. "He's going to get himself hurt one of these days." Tails said a bit annoyedly. "Hasn't he already?" Shadow asked with a cold and sarcastic tone. Tails gulped.

Sonic zoomed past the geysers as lava erupted out of the ground, the burnt dirt beneath his feet shaking. The blue hedgehog used his foot work to jump over one of the high towers of burning hot lava, landing of the other side, his breathing thinned. "Woo!" The hedgehog said, somewhat out of breath as he kicked the dirt.

Shadow slowly skated over to his side, air shoes powering down. "Oh, hey, Shads!!" Sonic smiled and pretended to lean against the air above the geyser he had jumped over. Shadow raised his eyebrow, "Are you trying to make small talk in a field of disaster?" "Yes!" 

Blaze quickly ran past the boys while Sonic smirked, catching them off guard. "Can you boys focus and hurry up before I get there first?" She asked, sounding a bit irritated. "OH YOU'RE SO ON!!!" The two hedgehogs smirked as they called out in unison. "It wasn't-" Blaze sighed, "Never mind, at least it'll make them hurry up."

The young fox ran, stumbling on rocks every now and then. "CAN WE PLEASE STICK TOGETHER!?" He all but cried out to their friends that were near. "We're trying, Tails." Knuckles explained, a geyser blasting up in front of him, "But it's kinda hard when there's lava everywhere!" Tails sighed, looking around to make sure no one was in danger. Tails quickly spotted Aster, he stood on what looked like normal ground, but Tails eyes widened in fear. "ASTER!!!"

Tails quickly ran over to his friend and pushed him out of the way and onto the ground right as another geyser formed where he stood. Tails and Aster fell on the ground near one another with a grunt of pain. The twin tailed fox looked up again, the lava from the geyser stopping up in the air before starting to fall again near the two.

Tails reacted fast, quickly grabbing Aster and putting themself on top of him to block the rain of molten rock. Tails eyes shut tight, wanting to protect his friend more than himself for some reason. A rock suddenly floated above them, a light blue arua around it. "Tails! Aster!" Silver called out as he levitates the rock above them as he started to run over. 

"Are you two, ok?" The white hedgehog asked as he helped Tails and Aster up. "Yeah." The wolf pup whispered, "Thanks, Tails." "Uh, Y-yeah, no problem. I-I'm fine too!!" Tails studdered nervously. "CAN WE HURRY UP!?" Rouge glared as she flew above the others, dodging several blasts of lava. Sonic zoomed and stopped in front of Silver, Shadow soon following along with Blaze who floated above the ground using her fire. "We scouted out the area up ahead, the tremors are moving faster then we would like, but doctor Eggman's base is right up ahead." Shadow explained coldly. 

The ground shook once again, Aster fell into Tails and held on tightly. All of the others took a few steps backwards to maintain balance, even Rouge could feel the vibrations. The bat groaned and fell to the ground slowly, holding onto her head. "Rouge!" Knuckles grabbed the bat gently to help her from falling over. The small earthquakes only got worse, the ground cracking beneath their feet slightly before suddenly stopping. 

"I definitely don't like that." Sonic said once the ground had stopped moving. "Ya think?" Shadow asked sarcastically with a glare. Tails quickly made sure Aster was ok before bending down to examine the cracking. "Do you th-" Tails was cut off by the other 'experienced heros' making a plan to get into Eggman's base and get him out of the other dimension.

"If we can get Tails to that portal machine he'll be able to teleport us back there." Silver said confidently. "And what if he can't?" Amy asked skeptically as she took a step forward towards the albino hedgehog. "he's Tails!" Sonic exclaimed, "He's got this! Right, Tails?" "Huh!? Oh, yeah, um, RIGHT!!" The fox spoke, studdering over their own words. "See?"

Sonic zipped through the halls off Eggman's lair, running atop robots that had somehow been disabled. The other mobians followed along after the blue hedgehog, although Tails was leading whilst he tried to fix the gadget they had taken from 'Egghead'. Sonic zoomed to Tails' side. "Any luck?" The cerulean hedgehog asked. "Nope." "Agh! Don't you know where this portal thing is that you keep talking about!?" Shadow roared.

"Of course, I do!" Sonic glared in frustration, "It's right around the corner." He spoke as he rolled his eyes. " Shadow walked past the other hedgehog, purposely bumping into his shoulder with his own. 

The gang entered into the lab, Sonic zooming around instantly. Tails quickly ran other to the machine, it's a glow and power had vanished along with some parts of it haven fallen apart, presumably from the earthquakes and tremors. The young fox began to try and start it up, although they weren't really getting a lucky break.

Shadow tapped his foot impatiently, "Well?" He asked coldly, "Do you have this... thing working yet!?" "Uh, no, b-but I'm sure I can fix it." Tails keep working, eventually putting the fallen pieces back in place. "Alright, just took a few minutes!" He said proudly, "Now just to start it up!"

The young fox pressed a few buttons but after a few moments, nothing happened. "What!? But-but I was sure I fixed everything." All of them stood in shock, sadness replacing the hope they had, except for Shadow who remained cold. Nothing worked, no matter how hard Tails tried.

The fox fell to his knees, tears swelling up. "I can't..." He whispered just loud enough for them to hear, "I failed." Tails said before starting to cry into his gloves in front of the one way they thought they'd could fix everything.
