Older in December

On the first day of December
With all the festive cheer,
Everyone was happy
The holidays were near.
White and silver
Green and red,
All the little kids
Couldn't go to bed

The joys of December
At the first sight of snow,
Waiting for Santa
To call Ho Ho Ho.
Down the chimney
With presents and toys,
Filling the stockings
Of good girls and boys.

But something is different
As the years go by,
As I grow older,
And I don't know why.
The snow is all gone
There's no Christmas lights,
And the holiday cheer
Is nowhere in sight.

Something is different
This holiday time.
No one is jolly
No bells have chimed.
We still go to church
On Christmas Eve,
But everyone seems
In a hurry to leave.

December 24th,
The night of family and friends,
Yet sooner than expected
It comes to an end.
There were no Christmas movies,
No holiday cards,
And it seemed to me
No one traveled that far.

December 25th
St Nick had been before,
But little to no one
Showed up at our door.
Everyone opened the gifts
Under the tree,
Yet no one seemed happy,
Not even me.

The gifts were great
Don't get me wrong,
But maybe I wanted
To hear another Christmas song.
I get lots of clothes
And yet I'm not mad,
Christmas this year
Just seems kind of sad.

No gingerbread houses,
No elf on the shelf,
And now that I'm older
I had to help.
Save the magic
While you still can,
Don't let the magic
Slip out of your hand.

Yes I am older,
Some say I'm wise,
But now that I'm older,
I start to realize
All the things I loved about winter,
The memories I share,
And i know Christmas is about
Showing loved ones you care.

December comes, December goes,
The new year comes around.
I'm glad that I am older,
And my loved ones safe and sound.
