MADDIE HAD BEEN, practically, attacked all day long. Everybody had been eyeing her up and down like she was a criminal. People came up to her left and right asking how she was, how she felt. Truth is, she didn't know how she felt. It was a lot to take in.

She was at the library, working on homework and trying to get her head straight a few hours after school. She noticed occasionally as Ani and Clay looked over at her, angering her more and more until she finally looked at them. "Okay, what?"

Clay and Ani looked at her, trying to play dumb. "What?"

She pushed herself from her feet and stomped over to them. "Look, I don't know anything about anything. I haven't seen Bryce since court and I don't know how I feel about it, okay?"

Clay nods, his hands up in defense. "Okay, yes. Sorry."

"So, he hadn't been in touch, or anything?"

"Why do you care? About Bryce?" Maddie asks the girl.

Ani shrugs. "I guess I don't really."

"Good. So drop it." Maddie turns back to her seat and grabs her things before storming out.

As soon as she's walked out the door, Ani turns to Clay. "She's lying. I know for a fact she's talked to Bryce since court because I saw it happen."

Ani was walking down the stairs of the Walker house with a tray in her hand when she heard his voice. She didn't know who he had been talking too, but curiosity killed the cat, and boy, was she curious.

She slowly crept down the stairs when she saw her.

Madelyn Jensen, following behind Bryce Walker as he led her into his living room.

"Um, I guess we could— we could talk in here. Uh... do you wanna sit down? I could get you drink, or..."

"No. I'm good, thanks." Maddie moves to sit on the arm of the couch and Bryce sits in a chair across from her. "I came because I wanted you to know that... I'm doing really great."

Bryce nods. "That's great to hear."

"I mean, it's taken me a while, because for a long time I thought there was something in me that was, like... permanently broken."

Bryce stumbles over his words. "I don't know what to say."

Maddie nods with a slight chuckle. "Yeah, clearly. But I don't need you to say anything. I just need you to know that you didn't break me. Or I guess the parts that you did break, I'm rebuilding them and they'll be stronger than they were ever before."
