MADDIE WAS CALLED TO the police station. Apperantly, Bryce's house had a security camera and during an extensive amount of searching around, the footage of Clay arriving at his house with a gun finally reached the police department. Maddie sat at an interrogation table with her hands in her lap, staring at the black and white figures of her, Justin and Clay on the screen. She felt like she was reliving that moment.

"Justin and I talked him down, that's all." Maddie explains to Deputy Standall. "We were scared shitless of what would've happened. We didn't think he would pull the trigger, but that day was really emotional." It was the day Chloe refused to testify against Bryce.

"And what do you think would've happened?"

Maddie gulps. "Clay was far more at risk of hurting himself than Bryce. I almost broke down when he pointed the gun to his head."

"Why was your brother there, Madelyn?"

Maddie bit her lip. "He was angry. He wanted to get justice, or something."

"Justice for what?"

"Justice for Hannah. For me, I guess." Maddie twiddles with her thumbs. "It was the day Chloe Rice refused to testify and we found out Bryce was going to get away with everything. He was pissed and he decided to take it into his own hands, I guess."

"But Bryce didn't get away with everything, did he?"

Maddies scoffs. "Are you kidding? With all due respect, Mr. Standall, that's bullshit. Bryce got off a rape charge with three months probation. Seems to me like he actually did get away with everything."

Deputy Standall nods. "What happened to the gun Clay used that night?"

Maddie shrugged. "I'm not sure. Justin said he took care of it. I think he might've said he threw it in a dumpster behind an old restaurant, but I don't know for sure. Justin never really talked to me about it."

"Do you believe Clay would have hurt Bryce Walker again?"

Maddie immediately shakes her head. She knew what Deputy Standall was insinuating, and she didn't believe it for a moment. Her brother was stupid and made dumb decisions—case in point now. But he would never be capable of killing someone. He wouldn't be able to stomach it.

"Not even close." Maddie says. "My brother's stupid, but he's not a murderer."

Deputy Standall nods and opens his mouth to ask Maddie more, but he doesn't get the chance. Her mother is busting through the door. "Maddie, let's go."

"We're in the middle of a conversation, Mrs. Jensen."

"No, you're interrogating her. And you're harassing her. And we're done." Lainie spits.
