MADDIE DIDN'T KNOW what to do. She was driving herself insane. Everything about the day had been driving her insane. It didn't make any sense. It was all too much and it all happened so quickly.
Bryce is dead. They found a body. Everyone thinks she did it.
"Everyone's looking at me asking questions. It's freaking me out." Maddie tells Justin as he paces in the motel room.
"Mads, do you think this was a stupid idea to get together tonight?" He kneels in front of her. "I mean, just everything is so fucking crazy right now and—"
Maddie leans down to him. "Justin, I need you to keep your shit together, okay? For me. I can't have you falling apart on me."
Justin nods when a loud knock echos through the air. The two look at each other confused, silently asking who the hell it was, before Justin stands up. He moves to look out the window. "What the fuck?"
Clay and Ani are standing outside the door when he opens it. "Hello."
Maddie stands up. "What the hell are you guys doing here? Come inside and close the door. Come on!"
Justin closes the door and Clay immediately starts ranting. "Justin, look, here's the thing. Whatever happened, we can take care of it. I'm sure it was self-defense, or at least we can make that case. Just say calm."
"Hey, I'm super calm. What the fuck are you talking about?"
"We don't think anyone's gonna judge you. With all the history—"
Maddie cuts Ani off. "How'd you find us? Did you follow us?"
"Yeah, why did you find us?" Justin asks.
"We know what you did! What both of you did. And we want to help."
Maddie's brows furrow. "Help with what? What the hell are you guys talking about?"
"Whatever we need to do to keep you guys out of prison."
"Prison? Dude, what do you think we did?"
"You got back at Bryce!" Clay says frantically. "For what was going on with him and Maddie."
Maddie looks between him and Ani. "What was going on with him and Maddie?"
"It was Bryce, wasn't it? He was the one you were talking about with Jessica when you said you had to rewrite your story."
"And I'm sure we can explain this in a way that makes you both innocent. You were, like, under Bryce's spell and you confronted him..." Maddie and Justin stare at Clay.
"Crime of passion." Ani explains.
Justin looks at the two for a moment before bursting out into laughter. "I'm so sorry."
