MADDIE WAS RESIDED inside the boys' out-house, sitting at the counter and sipping away at a cup of coffee she had brewed for herself whilst she leaned over her brother's shoulder, watching him scroll on his computer screen.

Displayed was an article recently published about Clay. Maddie wasn't really fazed by it, but Clay couldn't stop complaining--mainly about the picture of choice.

"Of course that's the picture they'd use?" Clay groans.

Justin snickers lightly. "Yeah, dude, that is not your best look."

Maddie nodded along, agreeing with him silently. You see, ever since Justin wild decision to break things off with her, she'd been avoiding him as much as she could. Which clearly wasn't a whole lot considering they lived together.

"You're not looking to good right now, either. Did you sleep at all last night?"

Clay nods slowly, bringing his mug to his lips. "Yeah."

"The nightmares again?"

"Not again," Clay shakes his head, "They never stopped."

"Shouldn't you be talking to someone?" Justin asks.

"Shouldn't you?" Maddie furrows her brows at Clay's question, glancing at Justin quickly. He glances at her for a moment before taking a sip from his coffee. What did he have to talk to someone about?

"Who do I talk to? What do I say? 'I didn't kill Bryce. I'm not crazy.'" Clay says. "I feel like that actually makes me sound like a crazy person who killed Bryce." Maddie shrugs slightly, silently agreeing when Clay's phone goes off on the counter.

Justin looks down at the screen. "Mrs. Baker? Sorry, is she in town?"

"What?" Clay takes the phone from him and slowly rises to his feet, walking away as he looks at it. Maddie watches, silently sipping her coffee.

It wasn't necessarily new news to her that she was back. Maddie had a conversation with her after Homecoming when she'd reached out, but she hadn't heard from her since.

Maddie sat quietly, sipping at her coffee when she noticed Justin look at her. "Can we talk--"

"I need to get to school." she says, cutting off his sentence and rising to her feet.

"Yeah, she texted me," Maddie tells her brother as she sits in the library. Since he'd heard she was back in town, he'd been making rounds to everyone, asking if she'd reached out to anyone specifically. "She wanted to check in. You know, see how I was doing."
