Edward appears a little older than Bella though he is actually centuries older
He lets himself be seen by Bella and they play/ explore the forest together
They "grow up" together
The villagers assume Edward is an imaginary friend she'll grow out of
One day a child goes missing/turns up dead so she's not allowed to go back into the woods alone anymore
Bella becomes the town weirdo (always reading books rather than making friends) though she's beautiful. She slowly forgets about Edward, his family, and the magical world he introduced her to but he doesn't forget her
