Azu was on top of the world. His senses were pleasantly dulled by the white wine he'd been drinking all evening, and he had the most beautiful woman in the room keeping him company. At that moment, he couldn't ask for anything else. He'd seen the stares that followed them around when they'd danced together. Her dark skin perfectly complemented his lighter tone. The dress he'd gotten her easily hinted at the curves she was packing without exposing too much. Her jewelry was a perfectly selected accessory; people who knew their stuff would recognize the piece from the biggest auction in Nigeria that year. All in all, she looked classy and her beautifully formed face drew everything together. Men stared, openly lusting after her but knowing she was way out of their leagues. The women stared in envy and admiration, longing for the clothing they hadn't thought to pull or the man that was now the most sought-after bachelor with his best friend tying the knot.
Ijeoma seemed oblivious to all these as they danced, smiling at him as if he was the most important man in the room. Azu could almost feel himself floating. He'd smiled back at the men who wanted her, letting them know just who she belonged to. They could look but they knew at the end of the day, she was going to be with him.
The elevator dinged as it opened, drawing him from his thoughts. He led her out, a hand on the small of her back. She gave him a small smile but didn't pull away. Azu pulled out the key card for the room and unlocked the door. She walked in then began to shut the door. He blinked in confusion before stepping in. When he looked up at her, the smile she'd been wearing all evening was nowhere to be found.
"What are you doing?" Ijeoma asked, her face blank, as if he was a stranger.
"Going to bed obviously." He grinned at her, swaying a bit on his feet. She eyed him, a small smile tugging on her lips before fading back to that unreadable expression.
"Why are you in my room? Go sleep in your room."
"This is my room. It's our room."
Ijeoma grinned, shaking her head. "I'm not sharing a room with you. Get out."
"What?"
"You heard me." She walked towards him and Azu blamed it on the alcohol but he found himself moving back a few steps. Looking at her now, she looked quite intimidating. It didn't matter that he towered over her by a few inches, it was very clear that she dominated the room at that moment. He'd been looking at her like a kitten, somehow he'd blinked and she was like a mountain cat ready to pounce.
"We're staying together. My friends will find out we're lying if we take different rooms."
"You can tell them we're still taking our relationship slowly. Not all couples sleep together." She threw in a glare, taking a step closer.
Azu stood his ground. "We had an arrangement, woman."
"Yes. That part I believe has been carried out. I did an amazing job today. I never agreed to being your whore."
"I'm not asking you to have sex with me. I didn't pay for that, I know. But sharing a room will only make our story more believable."
"It's almost dawn. Who is going to check if we shared a room? I'm sure your friends will be too busy with their significant others to worry about us. So, get out."
"You're serious?"
"Dead serious."
"Wow."
"Please leave." She crossed her arms pushing her boobs up and effectively distracting him. The diamond piece sat delicately between the mounds of flesh that had been tempting him all day, and just like that he forgot what they were talking about. "My eyes are up here."
