The next morning, Ace found himself back in his workshop, sipping on a cup of coffee and feeling particularly pleased with how things had gone the previous night. Evan had finally gotten some rest, and Ace felt like he had accomplished something meaningful.
His phone buzzed on the workbench, displaying a message from William. It read, "Hey, could you check the camera system? Something seems off, getting weird feedback."
Curious, Ace set down his coffee and pulled up the interface for the security camera system he'd installed in William's house. He quickly realized what William meant by "weird feedback." There were occasional glitches and disruptions in the video feed, but what caught his eye was an anomalous data packet being sent to the cameras.
Intrigued and concerned, he initiated a deep dive into the software. After a few hours of meticulous examination, he discovered a hidden subroutine. The program was emitting a high-pitched frequency intermittently—so high-pitched that it was beyond the scope of human hearing. But such frequencies could affect the nervous system, even if people couldn't consciously hear them.
Ace frowned as he delved further into the coding, tracing its origins. And that's when he found it—an encryption signature that was hauntingly familiar. It bore the mark of the 'Malhare' project, a program he and William had long since abandoned due to its glitchy, unstable behavior.
"A high-pitched frequency emitter... Could that be what's causing Evan's nightmares?" Ace mumbled to himself. It was a reach, but he'd seen stranger things in his time.
He immediately isolated the malicious subroutine and deleted it, purging it from every corner of the system. Then he installed several layers of additional security to prevent any such intrusion in the future.
Feeling a mixture of relief and renewed concern, Ace picked up his phone and dialed William's number.
"Will, it's Ace. You're not going to believe what I found in the camera system. We need to talk. It's about Evan, and it's urgent."
As he waited for William to pick up, Ace glanced at the coding interface one last time, still unable to shake off the uncomfortable feeling that someone—or something—had been attempting to tamper with their lives, again. But who could manipulate code in such a complex, targeted way? And more importantly, why?
It was another puzzle to solve, but for now, the priority was Evan's safety and well-being. With the malicious code purged, he hoped the nightmares would end. But deep down, Ace couldn't shake off the feeling that this was far from over
