Chapter 4

Location: Ace and William's Joint Office, late evening

Ace: (sitting back in his chair, rubbing his temples) I never realized we had so many former colleagues. This list is exhausting.

William: (scrolling through a spreadsheet on his computer) Indeed. You'd think we ran a Fortune 500 company with all these names.

Ace: Well, it's narrowed down now, at least. (takes a sip of his coffee)

William: (clicks on a cell in the spreadsheet and highlights it) Yes, down to five. Rebecca Sullivan, Martin Geller, Lucy Thompson, Frank Rogers, and Helena West.

Ace: Each of them had access to our projects, each of them capable of coding, and each of them left our employment under less-than-ideal circumstances.

William: (pauses) Rebecca Sullivan. Now there's a name I haven't thought about in a while. She was brilliant, but far too reckless.

Ace: Reckless and insubordinate. I still remember the day we had to fire her. She was livid.

William: She was working on the Malhare project around the time it started showing all those glitches. (looks at Ace intently) You don't think...?

Ace: (pauses) It's a possibility. She had the skills to manipulate software like that, and the knowledge of our systems. Plus, she had a motive.

William: Revenge?

Ace: What else? We essentially blacklisted her in the tech community. It'd be hard for her to get a job after what she did here.

William: (stands up, starts pacing) So, what do we do? We can't just accuse her without proof. But if she's targeting our families, we need to act fast.

Ace: (stands as well, walking to a locked drawer and pulling out a small device) I think it's time we do a little investigation of our own. We need to backtrack those coding bugs, find out where they originated.

William: And if they lead back to Rebecca?

Ace: (looks at William seriously) Then we go on the offensive. If she's declared war on our families, then it's a war she'll get. But let's gather the evidence first. We'll be no better than her if we act recklessly.

William: (nods, resolute) Agreed.

The two men share a look of understanding, each aware of the weight of the situation. With their narrowed-down list and a renewed sense of urgency, they prepare for whatever comes next. And both can't shake off the feeling that Rebecca Sullivan, once a part of their team, might be orchestrating the chaos infiltrating their lives.
