Kiara
Maybe once or twice the thought crossed my mind but never to this extent.
Marriage? That's like telling me to drown myself. Not at a time like this, never at a time like this. I didn't even think of getting together with anyone, not to talk of rings and lifelong commitments. It's a topic that I didn't think of much, maybe I didn't even think of it at all and it's funny how even though I was in my early twenties, the thought of settling down never crossed my mind.
On the other hand, I could give my sister the best life. I would finally have full custody over her, be her parent, and not just that, I would also be able to pay for her remaining years in high school and secure her in the best college. A new house? Ten million dollars? Twenty percent of his properties? The offer was too good to turn down, it was like something I would never get the opportunity to see again but then, could I walk into a marriage with a man I barely knew?
Not just a man I barely knew, one who was a million and one things. The gun owner included. What if he gets mad one day and blows my head off? That's unlikely to happen but still, It all came down to the fact that I didn't know who he was.
"I" I paused, thinking of my decision carefully. It would mean I'm losing it all but to think of it, I never really had it from the start "I don't know" I blurted out, mind racing in different directions.
"Why? I'm giving you everything, what more does a woman want?"
"You have the wrong view of women, that isn't all a woman wants"
"I don't have all the time in the world to spend with you if that's what you're thinking," He said. He made it look like we were trying out a food choice, weighing different options to make something work. Not just that, he also sounded like one that was very desperate and it was weird to see a man with so much have troubles like this.
"That's kind of part of marriage. Do you even understand marriage?"
"No, and let me guess, a coffee girl with an almost 2.0 GPA suddenly knows everything about marriage?"
"You see this is why we have so many disagreements, it's because you're the rudest most incompatible individual on the planet"
"So that's why you won't marry me?"
"Yes and also some other reasons, many other reasons in fact"
"I almost killed Cairo? Do I have bad friends? Funny hair?"
"Oh no, your hair's perfect"
"Is that a compliment?"
"Forget I said that, you have very average hair" I chuckled. Chuckle in indecision is the best feeling ever.
"You said it's perfect"
"And I said forget I said that, you have average hair"
"Whatever sets your boat afloat"
"Back to the topic, why would you choose to marry me when you have other fancy friends who aren't coffee girls or live in a beat-up apartment? You're famous and there are a lot of other women who would die to be with you, why me? I mean_"
"For goodness sake Kiara, this isn't a movie. Make your decision already"
"So you think I'd suddenly want to be with you just because you're giving me what_"
"Even if you worked for me for ten years, you wouldn't make as much as I'm offering"
"If you cut me off again, I'll decline. Don't try me, I'm a woman of my w_"
"I'll give you a few days to think it over"
"Great"
"Three days"
That's why you shouldn't hope too much for something, especially if that something relates to David Antonio Russel. He was never the understanding one, and never will be "Gee thanks, that's a lot of time"
"This comes with a lot of advantages Kiara, it's the life you've always dreamed of"
"I don't dream of having big cars or houses everywhere. It's fun but if I have my sister with me and I can afford to meet mine and her needs, I'm okay"
"You will have your sister with you plus more than enough, think it over. It might just be the best opportunity you'll ever get"
The next morning
What a morning! You might say cause Antonio ordered that I should be moved to the best room in the house and he also ordered that my wardrobe be changed to most colorful elegant dresses, ones that spelled out billionaire's wife. Before we dream too far, no, I haven't accepted to marry him. The conversation ended with him saying stuff to make me say yes right at that moment but your girl's a lot smarter than that.
So let's get this straight, a man who utterly despised me and wouldn't even drive in the same car as me now wants me to be his wife and give me a ton of cash and opportunities. Good things don't come that easy and when they do, they carry huge consequences, ones I wouldn't want to be an idiot and walk right into.
Now that I had my room changed to something worthy for a queen and a few of his staff to run errands for me, I had the life of a princess. The room was beautiful, the clothes were beautiful, and I had everything I needed and still, there was this feeling that at the end of three days, all of this would be hanging on a thin rope and I'd have to decide if I would keep them or not.
"Ah!" Came an exclamation from the entrance "Beautiful, isn't it?"
"Don't flatter me, Luke, this isn't the best time"
"Why? What do you mean? You're not happy you're getting all babied?"
"Babied? I was never babied before today. Why do I suddenly have this huge room and girly stuff"
"You want your old boring room and maid dresses?"
"Maid dresses? Those clothes were expensive"
"Whatever you say," He said, eyes scanning the room like he wasn't the mastermind behind the whole design "We leave in thirty minutes"
"We leave when I know why your boss who hates my gut suddenly wants to marry me"
"I'm not the man, why should I know his thoughts?"
"Aren't you the assistant? Secretary? Whatever you are, the point is that you know what's happening"
"The point is we're leaving in thirty minutes and try to wear something fancy this time, it's a wedding"
Luke left me while he barking orders over the phone. I guess this wedding was quite an event seeing I had to look fancy. Thirty minutes may not be enough to get ready but in the end, I could pass as average.
The dress I had on was one of the many in the closet. A red velvety material that clung to my upper body and flayed down the waist area. It covered my arms down to my wrist and it reached a little below my knee. It was quite the elegant one and a brown belt and accessories completed the look. I took a little over fifteen minutes cause black girl hair isn't the easiest to tame and at the end of it, I had a not-so-sleek bun behind my head. Coupled with popping red lipstick and black heels, I was done at the end of fifty minutes.
When I got downstairs, I met Antonio looking around impatiently and Luke around the corner. Before I got noticed by the former, Luke gave me a look that was enough to let me know I messed up so I increased my speed, heels clicking the tiled floor.
"Hey you guys, sorry_"
"I must have you know Miss Sky that lateness isn't part of the reasons I hired you"
Well, I must have you know that I can turn down your offer right now and you'd lose whatever reason it is you even asked in the first place but we're not saying any of that cause he probably had a gun in his pocket and he also looked like he could snap me in two.
"I'm sure we can still make it there on time" Luke intervened "And Miss Sky is just getting used to the new space, it's a lot to take in. Girl stuff"
Girl stuff? Talk about normal stuff.
Antonio walked away briskly and I followed, trying to meet up with his fast steps. What can I say? Troubles of a woman with short legs.
When we got outside, Antonio got into his car and I in mine. I guess the offer excluded riding in the same car. So let me get this straight, he wants us married and he still wouldn't mind if a bullet went through my car?
