Berlin, 1938
"Settle down, little ones!" Mrs. Gertrude said loudly, clapping her hands to call the attention of the rowdy class of 4-year-olds, walking towards the front of the room and picking up a piece of chalk from the ledge of the blackboard.
"In today's music class we're going to be learning a bit of history in it as well-" She started while scribbling onto the rough surface, hearing several groans and complaints behind her back.
"Now, what is the name of our country?"
"Deutschland!" Came a chorus of reply, and she turned around to face them all again, smiling gently when she saw that all of them had answered, all 6 girls and 5 boys in a sea of blond hair and a few brunettes, sitting attentively on the rug laid out on the floor.
"Very good, now can anyone tell me what word did I write on the board?" Mrs. Gertrude continued, taking a step to the side and holding up a hand to point.
"Nationalhymne!" Cried a little voice from the group of children.
"Correct, Kurt. The national anthem is very important for a country, it shows bravery and is a symbol of courage for the people to look towards, besides our great Führer." Mrs. Gertrude spoke while turning around to write again, white chalk powder fluttering down with each stroke against the blackboard's hard surface.
"Can everyone read this?"
"Deutschlandlied und Horst Wessel Lied." The children read out, some slower than the others. She had to notice that and bring those up with the children's grammar teacher. But for now, she just nodded again. "Very good, does anyone know what they are?"
"They are our national anthems!!" Shouted out another voice. "Good, Heide. Today we'll be learning the Horst Wessel Lied." Mrs. Gertrude said, picking up the eraser and going to wipe away the two other words on the board.
"Mrs. Gertrude, I know the Horst Wessel Lied!" Heide said again, which started another bout of talking from the children, who all seemed to agree with her.
"Really? How?" Mrs. Gertrude asked, setting the eraser down.
"We heard it on the radio!!" The children chorused one after another.
"Well, that's very good. Do you all know the song already, then?" She asked, smiling a little wider as many of the children nodded and grinned and continued talking over each other.
"Would anyone like to share it with the whole class?"
That surely got everyone excited. Each child was raising their hand and shouting loudly for her attention, little voices calling out her name.
"MEEE!!!" Came the loudest screech from the group of children in front of her. "MEE!! ME ME ME!!"
Mrs. Gertrude chuckled. Of course. "Okay then, Hans. Come up here."
Hans squealed in joy and immediately lunged off the rug, running to the front of the classroom with their teacher. He swept strands of pale white hair out of his face, jumping up and down on the balls of his feet.
