A.N: Sorry, this was another one of those chapters where I had to write it and then write another version and another and I couldn't pick which to put up. You can thank my sister for finally choosing a version for me... I love you all!! Enjoy!
------------------------------------------As Rick barreled into the hospital with Alexis in his arms and Cavin's wrist in his hand, he never stopped, not even once. Not until he reached the desk outside of the maternity ward where the E.R's front desk had said they had moved her once she was quote, "stable enough to be transported."
That word, stable, set his teeth on edge. Stable seemed to somehow imply, in his mind anyway, that at one point or another, she was in such bad shape that they couldn't risk taking three minutes tops to take her to the proper exam room. By the time he got through the front desk and into Kate's room, leaving Alexis with Cavin out in the chairs nearest the nurse's station, he was awe-stricken to find his future wife laying on the bed with a flushed face, apprehensive, but seemingly alright. And she was alone. Her eyes darted toward him the moment she heard him say, in his angelic tone, "Kate?"
Immediately the woman perked up. Her glassy eyes peered into him as she answered, "Rick," with relief in her tone.
He pulled up along side her bed just as he finished asked, "What's going on? What happened?"
"I don't know, I was- I was just sitting in class and then- that pain came back, stronger than the other times. I got up to leave, but when I got to the commons area, I just- it got really sharp and- someone called an ambulance when I couldn't move anymore and they sat me down. I called you the moment I could."
"What did the doctors say?"
"That I went into early labor," Kate replied with a pinch of pain behind her eyes. "They gave me some medication to stop the contractions and they said that the baby and I should be fine, but-..." She couldn't find the words to finish that statement. She was too scared and she refused to admit that to anyone. Ever.
"Hey," Rick started to ensure she was listening, "The doctors wouldn't say you were both going to be alright if they weren't certain you weren't both going to be alright, okay? They wouldn't open themselves up to a possible malpractice lawsuit like that. If they say you will both be alright, I believe them. They know what they're talking about. You're both going to be just fine."
Kate's eyes stuck on his as she batted her eyelashes, softly nodding her head as her expressionless face turned sideways and her head landed against his abs as her arms wrapped around his waist. She didn't say a word, and neither did he. They simply held each other. She clung to him for the security he offered that she hadn't gotten when she most needed it from her father, and he stroked her back, gently trying to convince himself to calm down. She was fine, and so was Henry. After a while of soaking in what comfort each could get, Rick finally spoke. "Alexis and Cavin are outside. Are you alright if they come in?"
Weakly, hesitantly, the woman whose heart was not in her response nodded weakly and told him, "Yeah. Sure, I guess so."
He could tell she wasn't one hundred percent okay with it, but he couldn't just leave his daughter out in the hall with Cavin. He was only eight. So, he walked out the door and started gently pacing himself toward his baby girl who looked twice as frightened and upset as he'd ever seen her. Her gentle call to her father, timid and small, reflected the inner turmoil she felt in not knowing what was happening with her mom. "Daddy?"
"Hey pumpkin," he said with a gentle reassurance in his tone, "Come on, let's go see mommy, huh?" The child nodded with fear and desperation. Rick leaned down and lifted her from the chair, her arms out reached for him when he did. He then started back toward Kate's room only to realize that Cavin wasn't following. The writer then turned back toward the stationary young boy and asked, "Cavin, aren't you coming with?"
