~Past~It's been almost seven months since Kabir had left. I missed him so much. We spoke but that was never enough. He even did video calls a few times but the grainy network sometimes messed up the video calls. The only thing that kept me happy for now was that he might return this week. Although he did say that he couldn't make any promises about being back on my birthday I was still happy.
In these months I had also stayed in touch with Kabir's mother. We called each other thrice a week to talk and check on each other.
I sipped some water and leaned against the slab. I was in my dance class. The class was almost over, our teacher had given us a break.
"Hello birthday girl!" Nidhi slapped my back. I glared at her and pinched her arm. She threw some water on me. I gasped as she laughed. I was about to dump my water on her when our teacher called us back to practice the sequence one last time before letting us go.
"Ha! I win!" Nidhi exclaimed.
"Only because ma'am called us," I said, Nidhi imitated me and stuck her tongue at me.
"Also why are you acting all gloomy? You are turning 21 tomorrow Ira! Be excited and happy. Your twenties are officially starting." I know she's right but I wanted Kabir with me. He missed my birthday last year but we celebrated it afterward and it was the most memorable moment ever.
I smiled and twirled to the beat when I remembered how we sat on the terrace and sang some random songs. We laughed and then fell asleep. There wasn't anything extraordinary about it but these simple things meant more than anything extravagant.
"Hmm, finally a smile on that gloomy face. I'm guessing you are thinking about lover boy." Nidhi said and moved to the other side gracefully.
I chuckled and rolled my eyes. "Maybe," I said with a constant smile on her face. No point in hiding it from her.
The next few minutes passed by quickly. Nidhi and I sighed in relief when our teacher appreciated us. It was hard to impress her so to get that sort of approval was great.
"Want to go eat an ice cream?" Nidhi asked and we packed our belongings.
"Sure let's go!" I said. She squealed and jumped. I laughed and shook my head. I zipped my bag and followed her as she skipped in front of me.
"Ira, can I talk to you for a minute." My Dance teacher called me.
"Hey, I'll catch up with you." Nidhi nodded and continued walking towards the exit.
"Yes ma'am." I stood in front of her. She smiled at me and passed me her phone. It was about a dance program in one of the best dance schools in the country. The more I read about it the more I was interested in the program. It was almost a year-and-a-half program where they fine-tuned the skills of a dancer.
"Ira please look into this opportunity it's a great way to learn. I have been teaching you for the past few years I may not always say it but you are one of my favorite students." I smiled, this was huge. But the doubts and insecurities popped up again.
It's going to be a challenge to get into this school and not to mention the competition is going to be crazy.
"But ma'am the acceptance rate seems to be less. Only a select few get into the dance school."
She smiled and patted my shoulder. "Don't think about that. Apply for it and give your best. The rest will fall in place." I took a deep breath and nodded.
