Ten past one
"Would you like to see her?" Doctor Gordon asked us as he reached into his pocket, he was talking about his daughter. He pulled out his wallet and tossed it to me. I opened it up to reveal a photo of a little girl, around nine years old, smiling with her arms around a dog, a sandy coloured shepherd of some kind.
"She's beautiful." I smiled as I tossed the wallet to Adam. I didn't mind kids, they were cute, I'd never have one of my own though. That seemed like too big of a responsibility.
"You gonna have any more kids?" Adam asked as he looked at the picture.
"We've talked about it," Doctor Gordon replied, "but with our schedules it's difficult enough to concentrate on one."
"So where's the lucky wife?" Adam asked.
"There's another picture behind the one you're looking at." Doctor Gordon replied. "It's my favourite one because we're all in it together. Someone, usually me, has to hold the camera which means I'm always missing from the photos."
"It's not here." Adam spoke, his brow furrowed. "The photo you're talking about isn't here."
Adam threw the wallet back to Doctor Gordon who flicked through all the photos, his hands shaking as he did so.
"He must have taken it." He spoke sadly. This "Jigsaw Killer" must be freaky if he had taken a family photo to keep in his wank bank.
"Turn off the lights." Adam said bluntly, ignoring what had just happened.
"What?" I asked before coughing.
"Just do it." He demanded and Doctor Gordon reached for the light switch, there was a click and we were plunged into darkness. The only part of the room that wasn't dark, however, was a patch on the wall behind Doctor Gordon's head, a glowing X.
"Behind you." I spoke. "Doctor Gordon, turn around."
"How come we didn't see that before?" He asked after turning and studying it for a moment.
"The lights in here hadn't charged it." Adam replied. "It must be glow in the dark paint or something."
The lights flickered back on and Doctor Gordon picked up his hacksaw before slamming it into the tiled wall where the X was. It wasn't long before a hole opened up, he reached through and pulled out a metal box with a padlock keeping it shut. He grabbed the key that he had found in his envelope earlier on and unlocked the box.
"What's inside?" I asked just as he pulled out a cell phone, I sighed and looked at Adam who was smiling, he caught my eye and winked before looking back at the box. Doctor Gordon had just pulled out a cigarette.
"Oh my god." I smiled. It seemed our luck had changed.
"The two most beautiful inventions." Adam laughed. "Give me that."
"Are you joking?" Doctor Gordon asked. "You're gonna put something that you found in this room in your mouth?"
"Yes." Adam scoffed. "I'm willing to risk it. Give me that sweet cancer." He looked over to me again but this time his smile dropped. "Sorry."
"It's fine." I chuckled before descending into yet another coughing fit. I didn't mind cancer jokes, in fact I didn't care at all, I was making them myself before I got it.
"I'm trying the police." Doctor Gordon spoke opening the phone, he dialed the three numbers and put the phone up to his ear but it didn't ring. "Shit. This was meant to receive calls not make them."
I sighed, we weren't getting anywhere. Our luck hadn't changed. Maybe we weren't smart enough to figure out these puzzles, I mean how could we have possibly known to turn off the lights to see the X? How did Adam know that?
"Adam?" I asked. Was I wrong to trust him. "How did you know to turn off the lights?"
"Who cares." He shrugged. "It worked."
"Yeah, but how did you know?" Doctor Gordon asked.
"Instinct." Adam replied.
"Instinct?" I asked and he nodded.
"You're a terrible liar." Doctor Gordon said.
"You say that like you know me." Adam spoke angrily.
"What else aren't you telling us?" Doctor Gordon continued.
"Well, um, let's see." Adam said. "On my sixth birthday, my best friend at the time, Scott Tibbs, stabbed me with a rusty nail. I didn't tell you about that. I didn't tell you that my last girlfriend, who was a feminist vegan punk, broke up with me because she thought I was too angry. I haven't told you that one of my toenails is slightly-"
"Just stop it!" Doctor Gordon interrupted him.
"Both of you stop it!" I shouted. "Doctor, there's a gun in that guys hand and you have a bullet. Shoot me right now and you'll be able to see your family again and..." I turned to Adam and waved my hand at him carelessly. "You can go back to doing whatever you were doing. It's not hard."
"No!" Adam yelled. I didn't get why he cared. He didn't know me.
"I'm not going to shoot you." Doctor Gordon spoke calmly before turning to Adam. "You knew to turn off these lights."
Adam exhaled deeply from his nose like a bull before reaching into the bath behind him, he pulled something out before tossing it to Doctor Gordon.
"Oh god." He sobbed, a photograph shaking in his hands.
"What is it?" I asked. "Doctor, what is it."
Doctor Gordon sniffed before throwing it to me. It was a photograph of his wife and daughter, they had matted hair and tears in their eyes and a gag in their mouths. Underneath it read regards with a drawing of a Jigsaw piece. It was awful, I felt lucky I had no family for the "Jigsaw Killer" to do this to.
"Turn it over." Adam whispered and I did to reveal more writing.X Marks The Spot.
Sometimes You See More With Your Eyes Shut."Where did you get it?" Doctor Gordon asked.
"It was in your wallet." Adam replied. "Behind the photo of your daughter."
"W-w- why didn't you show me this before?" Doctor Gordon stuttered, tears falling down his face.
"I couldn't." Adam replied. "I'm sorry."
Doctor Gordon nodded slowly as he stood up and reached towards the light switch.
"What are you doing?" I asked him.
"Shhh." He replied as the lights went out and the room was dark once again.
"What the hell are you doing?" Adam asked.
"Adam, listen to me." Doctor Gordon whispered. "I want you to play along with me on this. In the box was two cigarettes not one and there was a note saying that if I dip the cigarette in the man's blood, the blood that was poisoned, it would be an easier way to kill you."
"I don't understand." I whispered.
"I've dipped one of them in blood and I'm going to give you the other one, Adam." Doctor Gordon continued. "You're going to smoke it and pretend to die and then we can get out of here." Suddenly the lights went up and Doctor Gordon spoke at a normal volume. "Hey, uh, you still want that cigarette?"
"Err, yeah." Adam replied. "Sure."
Doctor Gordon picked up the clean cigarette and tossed it to Adam before grabbing a lighter from the box and throwing that too. Adam nodded as he held the cigarette between his lips and lit it, I watched as he took a drag of it, he leaned his head back and closed his eyes before breathing the smoke out and smiling. Then he took another drag before choking and grabbing his throat. He continued choking as he fell to his knees and then face first onto the ground where he fell silent. He was a bad actor but I hoped that wouldn't ruin the plan.
"Oh my god." I exclaimed. "What happened?" I turned to Doctor Gordon. "What did you do to him?"
He ignored me and turned to look at the camera on the wall.
"There!" He yelled. "I've done it! I've killed him with the poison just like you wanted! Now where's my family?" The room fell silent for a moment when there was a sudden buzz of electricity. I looked down at Adam who was seizing on the floor, crying out in pain.
"Adam!" I yelled before turning to look at the camera. "Stop it!" I screamed. "We get the point! Stop!"
Suddenly the buzzing stopped and Adam backed into the wall.
"Jesus christ!" He yelled. "I just got electrocuted!"
"Shit." I sobbed, my throat felt raw after screaming. "Are you okay?"
"Of course I'm not fucking okay!" Adam yelled.- Princexiero xx
